Flat Head Due To Poor Muscle Control

christheqt by christheqt Speaking(February 2007) (rank 500+)

My son has had severe muscle control problems in his legs, back and neck since he's been four months old. Now at 8 months old, he is just learning to hold up his own head. He has had a therapist come out every week since he turned two months. At

first I felt to blame. Maybe I wasn't holding my baby enough. When you have other children, it's hard to spread your time evenly. I made the first move. I called an organization called "Five Counties Childrens Center" and made myself a personal reference. Weeks passed and I heard nothing from them. I had to take my son to our family doctor and have them send out a referal for me.  Since it took so long for him to be seen, he suffers from a flat head. Alot a of babies have it, some more severe then others. My therapist said that my son's head will always be flat, because of his age, molding it back will be tougher. So if you have noticed a physical delay with your infant, that you believe needs attention, act now. And in the mean time try some of these helpful tips:

1. Change the position of your baby frequently. For every nap, change from on side to the other.

2. Hold your baby as often as you can in an upright position, one that is comfortable for you and your young one. Make sure your baby has lots of support.

3. Once your infant is ready, be sure to have tummy time as often as possible. Placing a mirror in front of your infant works really well to help with upper back and neck muscles.

And remember, if you think you need help, please don't be afraid to find it. There are many resources out there who are ready, willing and able.

my baby up until about 4 months would only lay on one side of his head he would not sleep on the other. If you tried to make him turn it he resisted and obviously you cant force it. In then end we put him next to the mirror and he would turn his head the other way to look at it. eventually he started sleeping on both sides and his head which was very flat on one side it almost looked as they he had a ridge  returned to normal after about month and he has a nice round shape now.  I have heard although i dont know if this is true that if the back of the head is flat though it is slower for this to return to normal and that some babies are born with a flat head?
