Falling out of Bed - Or Bumps in the Night
In order for each of these ideas to work you first need to place the child’s bed next to the bedroom wall. (Try not to use an outer wall or one that is adjacent
to a bathroom.)
1. A Bed Guard placed on the side - Most are compact, fold up & can be stored in a convenient storage bag. These are a great idea to use if you travel or visit family overnight on a regular basis. There are many different styles available, including the four I’ve listed below - available at Australia’s Babies Galore & selling for around Au$50 http://www.babiesgalore.com.au/index.php
- Childcare Bed Guard - Made from strong tubular steel with extra strong locking & folding mechanisms. This one can be used on appropriate sofas.
- Lindam Safe & Secure Soft Folding Bed Rail - Lightweight metal frame & is extendable to fit all known bed types. Features a soft, strong central mesh to cushion your child. Hinged design makes it easy for parents, but not children, to release & it has a reassuring click lock. Securely attaches to base of mattress.
- Infa Smartguard Bed Barrier - Includes 2 adjustable straps to prevent it from moving away from the bed during the night reducing the risk of injury.
- Love N Care Bed Rail - Fits standard size bed & made with a stable metal frame for extra security.
Alternatively Bed Guards can often be purchased on eBay at a much reduced price.
2. An Old Blanket rolled length ways & placed under the mattress by the edge of the bed will help stop the little one from rolling out while asleep. This is because the mattress is now on a tilt causing the child to roll towards the wall rather than 'uphill'. For very young children it is advisable to make sure they cannot get ‘stuck’ between the wall & the mattress as this could pose a greater risk than falling out of bed.
My son was a very restless sleeper & we would often hear a 'bump in the night' followed by screaming before we started to use this little trick. For us it worked.
