Treating Fever In children

janicepovey by janicepovey Minti Founder(February 2007) (rank 29th)

As i used to work in the medical profession i feel i can give this advice on fever trearment as pretty sound advice.

Genernally paractemol is considered the first choice for treating fever in children. Its both effective and SAFE when given in the recommended doses.

Medications that contain ibuprofen can be used by children over the age of six months old for pain and fever. It's main advantage over paracetamol is easing pain that's caused by imflammation such as arthritis, although caution is necessary if your child suffers from ASTHMA. Although most children tolerate ibuprofen well, it does have a greater risk of side-effects, particularly when used for a prolonged period of time.

But as any advice it comes with a warning, if your child continues to have a fever for more than 36 hours don't hesitate to get your child to a doctor, there might be a underlying cause.

Also if while your child has a fever and does not want to eat i wouldn't worry too much, but an important factor is to keep up with as much fluids as possilbe because like diarrhea symptoms, fever dehydrates children at quicker rate than adults.

Alot of fevers can be caused by teething or just feeling off like ourselves, but again i stress DON"T hesitate to take your child to a doctor if the fever or pain continues.

Quote. As our dear children are our eyes into the future, we protect and guard them with every fibre with-in us.

Great to know. Thanks..
I have a quick question in regards to the ibuprofen and asthma...
Does it or can it cause asthma attacks?   It may sound like a silly question I know but I am curious because all cough medicine it seems to be an ingredient.   Do you know of any that is safe to use if you have asthma?  Or can you point me in the general direction where I can find out this info.. I have tried looking but don't seem to be looking in the right places..

Thanks...

Hi Jesscore

As long as you only use the recommended dose in the time frame it should not cause any problems or a asthma attack. Iknow most cough medicine contain ibuprofen but there are alot of new medication out there it is hard to keep track, i will make some inquiries and get back to you.

update

Hi Jess,

well as i promised i made some inquires i hope this helps. Panadol infant drops is for pain and fever and has NO ibuprofen in it at all and is for infants from 1 month old onwards. The only caution is not be be used for a prolonged period of more than a month, but of course you wouldn't do that but i must say that as a caution. At least with this product you would not have to worry about a reaction to bring on a asthma attack.

Kindest Regards Your Minti Friend Janice
