Hiring Baby Goods

MissieK by MissieK Speaking(February 2007) (rank 303rd)

Before Nathaniel was born, Hubby and I were walking around the baby shops in despair looking at the prices of everything! Having a baby is expensive!

We were given a second hand car seat, one of those convertible ones. It had been sitting in our friends' garage for some time and was slightly mouldy in the straps. We cleaned it up, but there was still some evidence the mould was there. (We have since cleaned it up and it's a great spare car seat!) As a result, we were told the seat was unable to be installed, however we could get new straps for the seat - in 6 months!

In desperation we started hunting for a baby capsule, as I was 7 and a half months pregnant! We couldn't believe the prices! And it was just before Christmas, we didn't have a spare $300 for a car seat.

I recalled a conversation we had wit h a friend about hiring a baby capsule, so I spent a couple of hours going through the Yellow Pages ringing baby goods hire places. I was lucky enough to find a brand new baby capsule for a six month hire, for a fraction of the cost of buying a one, then not having to worry about storing it when Nathaniel grew out of it!

I only wish we had known about hiring baby goods before we bought our bassinette!

Since then, we have also hired an exer-saucer, and we have also hired a pram and car seat when we go interstate.

I highly recommend hiring items, like baby capsules, that your baby will use for such a short period of time and are quite bulky to store.

be careful with carseats

Personally, I would always go for a new carseat. Carseat safety is always changing and some carseats are no longer safe. Also, with carseats, they should be thrown away once it has been involved in any kind of accidents.

As for renting other baby gears, great idea!

that great
with the exception of keeping things for other additions to the family, i still have the same capsule my 6 yr old used and has been used for 2 more kids. my mum often hires things when we come for holidays though, saves us bringing so much.

Wish I knew this!!!
So right. You end up with so much unnecessary space filling can't throw it out keep it for the next baby i payed too much for it stuff. I wish I'd hired a capsule. The first three months we were in and out of the car with daily appoinments so Nick never slept properly and we had a legacy of sleep problems to deal with. I got a bassinette too -what a waste of money that was. It looked pretty in the nursery while we were waiting for bub. Ooooops Sorry anyone who's just bought one (they really can be quite cute......nervous lol)

Great advice. I hope first timers take it up. Well done!!

renting baby stuff.
I must say although I did not take this route as I did not know it was an option and really did not think about it..  I think it is a great Idea, being that I have now heaps of stuff stored in the basement waiting for the snow to melt to have a garage sale. As we don't know when and if we are going to have another baby it is just taking up space....

Maybe we will sell and rent for the next one if we are blessed with more children.

Hiring baby goods
Hiring is definitley the way to go. We hired our baby capsule from the Queensland Ambulance service and they even fitted it into the car for free. I paid about $80 for 6 months plus a $50 bond which I got back when I returned it. I will be doing the same thing for buba in June.
