Shopping time

Anonymous Author (February 2007)

While my daughter was on kindy holiday's, i had no choice but to take her shopping with me. I didn't mind at all, as i know she's a great helper. Being 4 next month, she's still learning colours, shapes etc, so what i do, is we go around,

and i will ask her to get me something like banana's, and she'll put them in the bag for me and put them into the trolley, and we will continue this around the store.

I will also ask her what colour a certain item is, how many are in the front row of a certain item and so on. It's fun for them, and they are also learning. I also allow my daughter to help me put the groceries onto the conveyer belt to be scanned and paid for, and only just started to allow her to give the checkout operator the money.

They are always commenting on how good she is at what she's doing, and she never plays up. I always tell them what i do, and they always think it's a great idea.

So if your child maybe plays up a little at the shops, then give this ago. This won't work on all parents and children, but it's worth a try.

kids and shopping
Hi
I love taking Jalan shopping...she is still so in awe over all the pretties.
She is getting good in choosing things that she likes as well
Just got to watch the baby shoplifting bug now she can reach stuff.
She will often hold a tin or something while i shop and she studies it
She learns so much this way
Luv Deb

Continue it as they get older
This is great advice, and doesn't need to stop as they get older.  We would always take the opportunity to teach our eldest son to look and compare the cost of items he was buying.  Eg., pointing out that sometimes bulk-packaged items are more expensive than if you bought them individually.  My 14yos doesn't accompany me to the shops much anymore, but we still see the effect the 'life lessons' have had on him.  He will meet his mates at the shops on the weekend for lunch and if they don't have a lot of money that day, he makes their money go further.  We know that he will make the effort to go to the local supermarket to buy the soft drink for everyone, rather than from the corner shop.  Cute huh!

Thanks heaps for the great advice. Yeah, i don't plan to stop when she gets older, as i agree with what you said about bulk buying is what we do with alot of things, and lasts us ages. thankyou once again.

It works
Your are right.  When I take the time to involve my children in the shopping process, it always go smoother.  They so want to help, if we just let them.

It works

Exactly right. They're alot happier if they want to help or not, but the majority of the time, they will and do help
