Brush Baby's Teeth in the Morning

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(February 2007) (rank 97th)
Today's first time parenting tip - Brush your baby's teeth in the morning

By now your baby should have a couple teeth all the way in, with more on the way. Hopefully you've made a dentist appointment around his 1-year birthday (I need to get on that), and you're
brushing his teeth with a soft bristled brush at least once a day.

I was of the mindset that it needed to be done at night, but our son usually is pretty drowsy after he's had his final bottle before bedtime. All it did was wake him back up and made it harder for him to fall asleep.

So we tried brushing his teeth in the morning after he's had a little breakfast. He's in a much better mood than at night, and he loves to help out and gum the toothbrush. And it doesn't interfere with his nighttime routine.

So if you're having trouble working a brushing in at night time, try doing it when dawn breaks. It may be easier all around.

tooth brushing mayhem
I'll be trying this. I started to wonder tonight if it might have been a problem. Same issues as you but same as you i thought it needed to be done at night. Thanks for the tips. You're a step ahead of the game. I'm guessing your little one isn't too much older than Nicky who was born on the 12th Jan 06. Take care and keep the tips rolling

I have also been told the earlier you start the better and the info included toothpaste (made for babies ofcourse).  I wonder though about rinsing out the toothpaste. Does everyone use toothpaste under 1?

I didn't start until Nicky was 1, and now it's only a teeny tiny smidgen of a dot. You can get special kiddie's paste which has a pleasant bubble gum or strawberry taste - no sugar. You don't need to rinse. The fluoride in the paste can stay on the teeth for lasting protection. Beware. Toothpaste should be treated like a medicine and kept out of kiddies reach.

Brush Baby's Teeth in the Morning

Great advice!

Rylan has 5 teeth (number 6 breaking through now) and we use one of those "early toothbruses" you get in the "Hospital's Choice Oral Care Kit" for the different stages of tooth development. It has a soft rubber end with little bumps. Easy for him to hold, and it is sterilisable.

After his solid feeds we wash his face and gently brush his teeth. He likes it, and likes to hold onto it and rub it on his gums after I have done his teeth.

and never ever ever....

....get to over the top paranoid with the brushing.....

Too much brushing also can also take off the enamel of the teeth.....

I had a long conversation recently with my dentist and we spoke about this for some time. She mentioned how she see's so many children who over-brush their teeth....I was one of these kids and seem to be suffering from it now as an adult.

So don't let anyone tell you that you can never brush your teen too much...because you can.

and as the advice says use a soft toothbrush....

Brushing babys teeth
Hi
Reasonble advice but also remember by doing it this way is a good way to foster bad habits
Any dentist will tell you brushing at night is the most important.....
Babies suck a lot at night stirring up lots of nasties left in their teeth to cause decay.
If there is anything left on the teeth when they go to bed....well just imagine.....
A good routine to get into is brushing teeth just before bed.....and after breakfast and also if possible after lunch...you can never brush babies teeth enough to make them strong and protect them..... same as adults.....
Some schools even have toothbrush programs.....
Sorry but my niece was my first hand experience at not brushing teeth at night....oooh the dentist bills my sister faced not to mention the comments from the dentist.....
Luv Deb

Brushing babys teeth

Hey Deb,

What you say is in fact very right....(not that you needed me to confirm this or anything..) One problem I have is with the brushing after breakfast though....thats just me personally though...

I always made my kids do it as soon as they got up - before breakfast - and only 'cause I have an issue with over night taste and germs in the mouth and yeah, I know....brushing teeth at night should get rid of alla that....but in my head it doesn't.

I wont even swallow my own spit in the morning....

Cheers

Lavinia

Good Idea
That sounds like a good idea. My daughter now has 3 teeth, 2 came in a few weeks ago and 1 came in yesterday or sometime today :) But we're making our appointment when my hubby gets his medical up and running from his work which will be about April.
