violeta by violeta Talking Back(February 2007) (rank 52nd)

Few years ago a friend of mine lost her house in a fire. they could not save a thing apart from what they had with them. When all was finished she was left with 5 picrures. ! silly one from one of the boys that was in the back of

the car, 1 of all the kids together in her vallet and 3 school photos of the kids. The insurance payd for everything and a nice lady gave her a photo album right after the fire (she told her You will need this). All the memories gone in 1 hour and there was no way of geting them back. She told me that she felt like she lost a loved one. She took the photo album and went to all her friends and family and asked if they have any pictures of them and if she could have them so now she has about 50-60.

When she told me this I realised that if some how I lost all my photos (I have over 5000 actual photos as on paper not digital) what would I do. I do give lots away sent to family and friends but mostly I only have 1 copy each. So I decided instead of making 1 copy to make more and as soon as I get them I give my perents 1 copy from each photo and give my sister one as well. Also I scan them and my husband keeps a copy of the disk at work. I aslo keep all the photos in one place so in case of an emergincy I could try and save as much as posible. I also keep the negatives in one box for the same reason and also if I need to re print them.

I have pictures of my son of his first haircut, first steps, first this and that and I would hate to loose them.

Burnt Photos
We had bushfires that came so close to us last year before xmas that it made me realise what is important. After I had acked the kids I grabbed all the photo albums and wall photos and then my HDD from the computer as this had my hundreds of photos from digi cam. I lost a HDD last year so I realise how it must feel to loose them in a fire as I lost so many pics. However I did manage to get a lot back from family, blogs and online photo albums :)

Saving photos...
The day my computer would not turn itself back on I was so upset, I broke down in tears.. I knew I'd been having trouble with my computer, I knew I had to make copies, as my computer kept rebooting itself and I kept saying make copies of the photos.. But did I no....
Then one day there was a power failure and when the power came back on my computer would not turn refused to join the world of electricity and would not open.. I was in tears, so upset.. Hubby comes home asks me what is wrong. I tell him in between tears and deep breaths...
He saved me by saying that every thing was saved on the hard drive.... YEAH..
So I made copies of everything.. But to this day now I put the photos on the computer and I make copies of every thing now... I thought I had lost all of my sons baby photos..  OH MY...

great idea
I think in a fire, as devastating as it is, some people would find comfort in the fact that their photos of happier times are safe.

You can even put a copy on line in one of those virtual photo albums

Treasured memories
This is really good advice. I hope it never comes to that. Couldn't imagine how i'd feel if all my treasured possessions went up in flames. I suppose just as long as everyone's safe...... You can't replace people... or photos.

On CD

Most photo places can burn photos of any kind (paper, digital, negative, slide, etc) (that is, burn in a good way, excuse the pun) onto CD.  Two copies of each CD stored in different places works wonders for memory security.

Doing the same with getting second copies of things like birth certificates, etc is good too.

Be devastated

I hate it when you see people who have been devastated in bush fires etc and they have nothing left, especially no photo's, how would you ever get over losing your memories.  When  we lived in bush fire prone area, I had a boxes  that had all our important documents and photo albums, when we did get evacuated back in 2002, I was able to grab the boxes my son and my animals.

Be devastated
you know how we sometimes get a photo or two from someone (say son went to a b'day party) and they end up here and there after the bush fires this year I said no more (even thought I am miles away) I now put them strate in a photo album.
