Easy does it, - how to get rid of that dummy!

youngmumof2 by youngmumof2 Talking Back(February 2007) (rank 153rd)

Luckily we didn't have trouble with this problem but lots of people do. So i thought i would write about how we made it through with ease and hopefully this helps some of you out there.

Getting rid of the dummy.

We mad e this a bit of

a process and started well before we took it away. With Iesha, we only gave her her dummy when it was nap time when she was about 7 months old. Then as she got to 1 year old we only gabe it to her at night time. And then we finally took it away at the age of about 1 and a half. I think this worked so well for us because she wasn't able to form a big dependency on her dummy. And when we did finally take it away all together it didn't phase her one bit. It was a very easy process for all involved.

I beleive that the longer you leave it to take away something from a child, be it be a dummy, breast, bottle, etc, the hard the process will be. Nappies are a whole different ball game, but that's another peice of advice.

Hope this helps someone. Even if this makes life easier for one person i have acheived a great thing.

Thanks for reading.

No more Dummy

I am happy to report since I left my previous comment......my son has had NO DUMMY

for around 10days now.

It all happened by accident.....very late one evening before he fell asleep I noticed his dummy was badly chewed and no way was he sleeping with it in that condition...so I told him

" Oh...it's broken ..it's yukky now and we have to put it in the bin "

because the only spares I had in my cupboard were not his usual type and brand well he refused it and fell asleep peacefully. Over the next few days I offered the same dummy and he refused each time.

I thought..excellent...wooho..so I didn't offer any dummy anymore and although I had noticed him looking for a dummy I kept distracting him with other things. So now he doesn't ask or look for a dummy. I'm happy with him. No more dummies.

Now it's time to keep on tackling with toilet training

good method

Hi there, my baby is now 15 months and i used the same method as you did. its been a week now since she last asked for it, and now she has completely forgotten about it.Quite honestly we lost the dummy at  her granny's place and i never bothered to find it. at least that phase is over. i'm making some progress with the sleeping thru the night story. so thats my new challenge.

thanks for the article.

Easy Does it.....Getting rid of that dummy

Thanks for the article....

I found it real easy with my daughter to give up the dummy......for her 2nd birthday, because she was a " big girl now "  ( was also out of nappies )  we gave it to the rubbish man on rubbish collection day and she happily waved it goodbye  That was many  years ago now.

My son who is almost 4 however...that's a different story...from the day he was born he was a sucker and needed something in his mouth so even now although I'm having problems....we have limited it so he only has it when it is time to sleep, but only if he asks...sometimes he forgets. Somehow with him I think it's more a security comforting thing, I'm sure the day will arrive soon where he no longer needs it.
