Recycling Tips

Gypsie by Gypsie Talking(February 2007) (rank 88th)

With everyone recycling just about everything now...Here's a few things I have done from using everyday items.

ClingWrap/Alfoil or xmas paper rolls......once the rolls have finished...don't throw them away.

Accumulate them and drop them off at the local kindy/playgroup. The kids love to colour & decorate

them and turn them into didgireedoo's among many more things.

Empty Cans.....These are great mainly the larger ones for example from Beetroot or 750g Bean mix and tinned tuna.

Take off the labels....and I decorate them with various printed adhesive contact and have used them to store my sons

texta's, colouring pencils, or your own pen holder. Keeps them tidy and in one place.

The smaller cans from tuna ( 425g ) once the label is off...sometimes the tin is gold and all you need to do is add

on some stickers, stars etc and I have used them to store chalk for the blackboards.

Empty Cardboard boxes....for example when that new T.V or DVD player is taken out....again....decorate the boxes with adhesive contact. Or let the kids use it as a playmat....if it gets dirty..no big deal.

When I was caring for a terminally ill relative with all the medications and needles the nurses required daily, the items had to be stored somewhere so I decorated them a cardboard box put it way out of the reach of little hands and it was also very easy for them to identify.

The little plastic plates from frozen dinners.....I keep them and when having a BBQ....insert a paper plate and it's more stable with food. I also keep a few to put my dogs food on...as they are flat they find it easier to eat from.

I'm sure there are so many more things to do.....if you have any ideas you would like to share, that'll be great.

recycle

logan practially lives in his washing machine box he has had it for over a year and it's still around and velli interestingly decorated... the big tin is a coolies idea hey we use formula tins for stuff mostly drums and other suitably noisy toys... bug has a clear pop top bottle (that has been sealed shut by kiall melting the lid on) that is 1/4 full of 100's and 1000's and she loves it (cause it's noisy and colourful) when logan was little we used to make most of his toys like that... shakers and rattles of all sorts containers for crayons and home made playdoh... but we fell into the trap of buying him stuff cause we thoug he needed it when we came into a bit more money (quiet a while back) and now he has just that little bit less appreciation for the simple things we can do ourselves without the help of the shop... hope we never do that with bug, i's learnt that lesson the hard way... great article btw... ya is coolies gypsie :)'s4u

recycle this heheheheh
Hi
Some great ideas......we took the kids to see the christmas lights one year and the best decoration of all was  this family had a gigantic tree at the front of the house and had decorated it with recycled household products.......it was awesome and it didn't cost them a fortune to decorate it.   We spoke to them for a little while and they collect it through the year and do craft projects with the kids then at the end of the year they decorate the tree.........
It looked better than all the hundreds spent on lights at the other homes
Tins made excellent covers for the tea lights to protect them from the wind  specially with a few holes punched carefully in them for the lights to shine out

It is amazing what you can do if you want to and think about it
Luv Deb

Recycling

We decorate milk cartons and put them up on tree's for the bird house's. (fill them up with seeds of course)  It's also a great way for your kids to connect with nature.

You could also use the milk cartons  as bowling pins. Wash them out, decorate them and   add tissue   paper for flames for birthday bowling. We  did this at the kids b-day party. It was such a big hit!

great ideas
it's nice to know that i'm not the only one with a house full of decorated old tins and cardboard all over the place. When i moved i saved on of the packing boxes and cut 2 holes in it and put an old blanket in the bottom and it became a "cat house" for my 2 cats to escape from my daughter.

Egg cartons to off cuts of wood.
I collect egg cartons to donate to the local food co-op before easter so when they get heaps of eggs in for those less fortunate than myself, they have somethign to put them all in.   I've taken all manner of things to kindy, playgroup, and child care.  From off cuts of pine wood from building jobs around the house, to empty cartons and cans, to old christmas decorations and christmas cards, old calendars, even old electrical items.  A broken vaccuum cleaner made for a great kindy home corner toy, as did an old (and the components removed) microwave, and old telephones are great toys as well.

Great Ideas
Just make sure there is no sharp edges around the cans before you use them for kids.

Great Greenie Ideas!
Waste not want not... I always try to rack my brains for ideas of how I can use containers instead of throwing them out too!  I really like the idea about taking things to the local kindy/playgroup - I will take this on for sure!
