Reading & Writing Product Reviews

Izzy by Izzy Minti Founder(June 2006) (rank 5th)

We don't have enough time in the day as it is, so why waste time in the store fiddling with products and debating whether something will withstand the test of time (or at least our little one's mouths). Being parents, we see on a daily basis whether something is really

durable and really a good buy. Our little ones are after all the best product testers there are, if you think about it.

There are a lot of websites nowadays that include testimonials and product reviews. I found the best site for this to be Amazon.com. From the simplest toys (starter blocks) to the most complicated ones, they have reviews available for consumers to read. Online specialty stores also have consumer testimonials, but a lot of these sites aren't household names yet. So again, Amazon.com  is my choice. They a wide variety of products (not only toys), plus some merchants actually use them to sell products online (like BabiesRUS and ToysRUs). Even if you don't plan on buying online from Amazon.com, you can visit the site just to read reviews. This way, you are already armed with knowledge by the time you find the time to go to the store near you.

If you find that the reviews helped you out immensely, it will also benefit a lot of us if you write your own after you've experienced the product. "Take a penny, give a penny", right?

Here's an example of one of the reviews I wrote at Amazon.com:

My husband and I just bought this for my 13 month old son and he loves it. We went to BabiesRus to see what they have, and picked this one. It's colorful, and whimsical. It can hold a lot of sand (6 bags of sand that you can also get from BabiesRus) and will fit more than 1 child. My son sits in it, but for older kids, they can sit on the claws (there are 2 claws). But watch out when grown ups sit on the claws though. My huband sat on it and it gave a little (he is 185 lbs), so he no longers sits there. I sat on it without any problem.

The cover is great too. It covers well. We've already had 2 hard rains and no water got in the sandbox. I know this is one of the things I was afraid off from reading other sandboxes. It's awesome!

Using the reviews
I just read a review about a tricycle that someone just let us use for Ethan.  I had to laugh because review after review said that it was the most dangerous tricycle they had ever had because the first time their child rode it, it tipped over (it is a 3 wheel so I thought that was part of the process a little).  Meanwhile it is Ethan's FAVORITE toy and while he fell off a few times, he is an old pro at it now.  I liked that your review said you had tried out the sandbox and how it worked for you.  It mentioned all the important things (size and functionality).  Thanks for the suggestion.

I think I know which bike you're talking about. Is it a radio flyer? We went to ToysRUs a while ago and saw a really cool radio flyer bike. We put Matthew on it to try it out, but he was too interested in the cars all lined up for him to climb into.

You're right. Some reviewers are too harsh.. but like all other things, we have to take them in stride. Some reviews makes sense, and some don't.

I also put a lot of faith in reading other peoples reviews of products. But admit I'm guilty of rarely contributing reviews myself...will try and rectify that though now!

I have my moments too. Sometimes I sit in front of the computer and write reviews on everything I've bought for the past several months. Then months and months later, I don't write anything at all.

You're right

I totally read reviews from people who buy the things I'm looking to buy. I'm always really happy that people take the time to do that. I thought about doing it but never really make the time. It's really a great idea to go out of your way to help out other people that way. I'm going to do that Izzy. Thanks for the encouragement.
