Food Banks...A Hand Up NOT a Hand Out...Here is some in Queensland ...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 7th)
Food banks...

Is it a hand up or a hand out.........

With the rising prices of food, fuel interst rates and rents alot of families are struggling with the shopping and basically buy the basics.....I know we were.......The sort of shopping we do now will not be for
everyone...... We go to places that have foods that are near their best before dates, have had the packaging changed so the people who make it have pulled it from the shelves or hasnt been a good seller....They also have things in bulk form fast food places.....Things that they either have too much of or by the company policy have to move it out....We buy these things at a very reduced price ...... Alot of people think this is a hand out but I look at it as a hand up........This is not charity as some people feel uncomfortable about taking this....You do pay for your foods but just a discounted amount...... Here is a few examples of what we have gotten in the past.........

Nappies disposables 15......$4.00 a packet
Caramel slices 24................$5.00 a tray
Dijonaise 2L.........................$3.00 catering pack
Potato chips carton.............$5.00 2 cartons
Slab of carrot cake..............$5.00 each
Naturals lollies.................... $2.00 a box 12 packets
Pork spare ribs2kg..............$8.00 a packet(marinated)
Cooked chopped chicken.... $5.00 1kg packet
Tampons.................................$2.00 double pack
Sanitary napkins.....................$2.00 pack of 24

There is different things each week.........

Most of these places also do food parcels for people as well so they actually make up a pack of food for a family which includes condiments bread meat butter cheese toilet paper etc........

Here are a list of Place we go to and addresses or contact details with the prices of the packs......

Logan city Food bank.........$25 for a food parcel which usually includes quiet alot of milk......It is on Jackaranda Avenue in Kingston near the overpass on the other side to the butter factory.....You need a medicare card to get one of these..........I cant seem to find a link for this one..........

Loaves and Fishes........$30 for a food parcel which is enough for a basic family of 4......It includes meat and veges condiments fruit etc......It is located at 29 Mary street kingston......You need a health care card to get a parcel here......

Tribe of Judah.......$20 a parcel which includes some things needed in the average home.....They also sell things at a reduced cost.....They actually have a website also........there is also a text message and email database for when they have freebies on offer......It is located on Queens road Woodridge.....

I am not sure of the name of the one at browns plains.....It is $30 dollars a parcel....And is usally a shopping trolley worth.....meats and bread and fruit and veges.....This place you do not need a health care card or medicare card you do have to pay the joinging fee of $2 from memory and you can go there as many times as you like in a week.......It is located at 49-51 eastern Rd Browns Plains

Gleaners.......Fernvale......Discount shopping in a grocery store type environment........They do not do parcels but sell lots of discounted things.......including most times 2L milks for $1........It is only opened on a friday between 10.00am and 12.00pm......it is located on the brisbane valley highway..........

The grocery Club on the Gold Coast.....This is a discount place to shop at......It is in Arundel on the Gold Coast.......There are great discounts in this place to be found and if you get a couple of people together then you can split the fuel costs or enjoy a family day on the beach instead hehe........It is located in molendinar and the contact number for the man who runs it is 0408 750 840.......

These places we go to are all in Brisbane and the Gold Coast Qld But I am sure if you look hard enough you could find them in your state....Alot of community groups do this sometimes they are church based.............Maybe if anyone else knows of some more in Queensland or has some in their own state they too could write an article on it as well.......

Having a family to feed is not easy and some people can do it easily and others scrimp from week to week........By buying from these places I am not only getting cheap shopping BUT I am also helping the community as all proceeds go to a great cause.........

I DO NOT LOOK AT THIS AS CHARITY I LOOK AT IT AS A HAND UP NOT A HAND OUT.......

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

There are some excellent organizations out there also their is one it has nothing to do with food where they donate a swag to homeless people in brisbane they are called street swags and I sure you can donate one through Rosies in brisbane. They are around $30.00 which was an idea that some lady that lives in brisbane came up with.

Re: Food Banks...A Hand Up NOT a Hand Out...Here is some in Queensland ...

these are all great places and all do a great job

i would use these places except for the fact that they are all on south side of Brisbane. i live on the north side... way way north... so its just too far for me to drive.

if you know any on the north side that would be great, as i do not know of any.

thanks for the great info, i will pass it on to a friend who lives over that way.... maybe when i visit, we might be able to go and look

I wish we had such a thing here. In worcseter there is Maggs Center which help the home less and seaiously hard up. you have to have a recomendation from the social security office to get , food cloths things to help start up a home.  most of these things would be thrown out if they weren't passed on to other people.

We shop from the reduced counter as much as we can. Being on bennifits the cost of every thing, encluding food has gone up moer than the bennifits.

Good for you,   Lisa x x x

Fantastic....
I think the local council Food Co-op does this near us.  They moved from where they were... I think they're near the little shopping centre up the road from us, the one across from the reserve.  ???  Anglicare used to do it as well, but they closed it last I heard.  Seems these things aren't capable of surviving around here.  Weird given how badly they are needed.

Fantastic....

Nah matey, not them....they are useless and thats why the never take off here. I went with a friend a while back and the prices that I saw in those ahh hum 'good will' type stores were sometimes more expensive than the supermarkets. They packaging they use are not even in competition with the larger stores either...its ok if you have only a couple of dollars to spend and you need something to get you through a couple of days, but not to do a shop in.

The one we have closest to what Angie is writing about would be 'Rite Price'....they have a lot of good bargins except you can't do a full shop there....

well done
the salvo's and smith family also offer the same kind of services and are in most capital cities and regional centres. It is really tough to try and raise a family let alone trying to cover the day to day bills. I know a lot of people are going to find your article of great benefit. A great article!!!!

A Hand Up NOT a Hand Out

WOW . . .  Well done again Ang . . .

Sadly we do not have these types of services in Tassie. If we did I would certainly be there!!!

Instead we buy in bulk at every opprotunity and pray that our old freezer never packs it in . .

Cheers Alana

I have never heard of it, must take a look if we have them in NSW, we are starting to get ahead now but for the last 3 years food shopping has basically taking most of what little money we had, I wish I knew about this, no Im just left with credit card bills from food.  Thanks again x
