How to make your own cloth trainers |

I have a daughter who is very sensitive and gets very bad bleeding rashes and so from 6 mths of age i had miss 2 full time in cloth....when miss 2 turned 16 mths she decided (against her mothers best judgement as it was the middle of winter) to
toilet train... I tried and decided i hate the foam store bought trainers..... They may be cheap but when you have a child who is a heavy wetter they make more mess (in my opinion) so they might as well be naked.....
I do love to sew and i love to shop...(what women doesn't?) and so i decided that i could make my trainers and then they would be special to me and my child..... There are alot of great WAHM's in Australia and i am a big advocate but money didn't stretch to buying WAHM trainers.... Being winter i went for polar fleece, micro fleece, and warmer fabrics.... I used hemp and microfibre for my inserts.....
I tried making side snap variety's but found my darling daughter would rather be naked as she undid these every chance she got and so i did the old fashioned pull up type in the end and these were great...(not wonderful when they do a milk allergy mess though....LOL)...Miss 2 has very thick thighs and a long rise....(for those who don't understand..this means the measurement from the belly button around to the lower back.... kids don't suit low rise hip hugger's at 2.....)
As my beautiful girl (yep i am biased) got better at using her "big girls toilet" as she puts it, i decided that it was better to go for summery fabrics..... I used old t-shirt's and soft cottons to make up trainers..... But in the end i feel in love with making a booster that fitted into a pair of store bought underwear....I made the booster from PUL, hemp and microfibre (cleaning cloths...hold up to 3x their weight in liquid).... Nice and absorbent but only in the wet zone(remember boys and girls need this in different area.....)These have been great and i use them for trips out to mums and shopping trips....
Remember to make your own you need to know how much your child wets..... i used a hour glass shape as my first booster and went more triangular when i made pads for the underwear from the shop..... Try taking apart a pair of knickers so that you can work out where you want to pad and what size you need... use this to make your pattern ...and then organise a shopping trip to buy the fabric
I use 1 x microfibre cloth, 1 x layer of pul (some people use taslon) and 2 x layers of hemp (you can use flannel or terry towelling).... I often added a layer of cotton (as i liked pretty fabrics) near the skin as this means my daughter feels wet ..I have added applique to the plain fleece trainers that i made to make them more attractive to my bub....we had love hearts on miss 2s bum and fairy's etc......
so you want to make you own but where do you start?
To get you thinking i have added some links....the nappy network trainers are great
