Illegal Drugs and teens...ICE...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 8th)
Illegal drugs and teens ICE

I wanted to Write about this drug because it has recently touched our community.......They say this drug can have an overwehlming effect on people when used.....Well recently a family around here found out what effects it can have even from its first use.......Recently a
young man who was a friend of my sons was having a stressful time as alot of teenagers do......family problems.....girl problems........not finding a job problems......Well it seems to us as the outsiders that all these things are normal day to day worries......For a teenager these can be sooooo intense.....Sometimes even pushing them to try something to make them feel a little better.........Well this young man did.....He took ICE.......And for the new year alot of the teenagers in the area got a funeral and a wake for this young man......Happy New Year to them lets bury a mate.......Sadly this is becoming way too common in most areas around Australia.........

What is ICE

Ice is a high purity chrystalline form of methamphetamine......Its common names are also Ice Shabu Crystal and Crystal meth.....

The way ice looks is pretty much decribed by its name.....It is consistently described as big colourless to white crystals or a coarse powder......Ice is sold to users in poitnts(0.1g) as it is so strong that only a small amount is needed at a time...........

Australia doesnt have a long history of this drug here as it is fairly new but there are a few ways it can be used....Where it does have a long history the main way it is used is smoked through a glass pipe.....Some people in australia who us ice do smoke it this way but others smoke it sprinkled on top of cannabis through a bong.....These are called snow cones......It can be heated up on foil and the vapours inhaled.......Many people in Australia inject this as it is easily dissolved in water like any other form of  methamphetamine. Ice can be snorted and swalled but these arent common ways of taking this drug.........

The percentages from the most recent National drug Houshold survey were as follows........
3.4% Of Australian adults have taken ice/speed/base
Among current users of  methamphetamines about 38% had taken ice so thats about 1.3% of the australian adult population

As with all drug usage there is long term and short term effects these effects I am about to tell you are the same for all users of methamphetamine speed/base/ice....

Feeling dependant of the drug...feeling you NEED it
Sleep disturbances
Weight loss
Feeling like you are scattered or agitated
Depressed and anxious when coming down from the drug
Some people get psycosis....so they feel like everyone is out to get them and they hear things that are not there

These effects are more likely to happen on Ice because it is such a strog form of methamphetamine they will also be more intense

Ice is a really dangerous drug..........

What could make a young mans life so bad that he felt the need to hang himself??? Well it was bad in his head.....even to outsiders it did not seem that bad.....Ice can have a really bad effect on you and make you do things that you would not usually do........Maybe without the use of Ice this young man could still be around.....No guarantee but just a maybe is better than a not.......

Once again the best thing you can do is talk to your kids about drugs and find out what they do and dont know.....Talkin about Illegal drugs is no longer a big  taboo subject these days.....Communication is the key to keeping our kids safe..........

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Re: Illegal Drugs and teens...ICE...

When I visited Canada I had my first exposure to Ice junkies. I thought to myself, we are so lucky not to have that crap taking over Australia. The people on it were scarey to look at and I had to physically stand between one of them and my niece (who was a baby at the time in her mothers arms) because an ice addict was INSISTING that they had the right to touch my niece. I said "Walk away NOW, you are NOT touching my niece" and have never seen my sister in law look so terrified- I have a brown belt in martial arts but the expression on the junkies face as they looked at my niece really unnerved me. That was a few years ago and now ICE has gradually seeped it's way into Australian nightclubs and I now see more fights, more strange behaviour and more girls putting themselves in dangerous situations. Even more disturbing is that amount of girls who hang off dealers llke groupies. Drug dealers are not rock stars, they are exploiters of weakness and make money off the depressed, the mentally unstable and the addicted. People who hang out with dealers should know, the dealer is NOT your friend. A real friend wouldn't encourage you to stuff up your life and your health. Thanks for this article, the more people know about ICE, the more people there will be that HATE it and don't want it in their country.

This is so scary! I had to stop myself from crying at the beginning. I worry for my kids that these drugs are so easily accessible.

Drugs in any form...
Drugs are bad... FULL STOP.....
They not only effect you but those around you...
Great Article...

I have found it hard myself just knowing that a family member is addicted to a particular drug... I worry for my family member and those around this one person.... It is so hard to watch a person going down, you don't know what you can do, you don't know how to deal with it....

What is as you say that makes a person feel so bad that they need to take this route..  Why also some people think of some drugs as a party drug...  IT ONLY TAKES ONE HIT.........

We need to educate and re-educate as much as possible...  It is amazing at the amount of people out there who think, No won't hurt  me if I just try it once...

We need to teach them not only about the effect the drugs can have on them, but the people around them, show them what they are going to lose, because they will lose....

Great article...

well done
this research is great! and very informative.

i was reading about how violent ice addicted people are, paramedics are refusing to take them as the para's cop a beating...  Doctors say they would rather treat 50 heroin addicts than 1 ice addict,

only a week ago, in a close suburb to mine, two ice addicted parents have been questioned about the death of their four month old son....  it turns my stomach to think people know of the consequences of taking this drug, and still take it..... so sad.
