TAKE YOUR KIDS TO THE FIRE HALL

FireFighterDaddy by FireFighterDaddy Talking(June 2006) (rank 184th)
Does your child know what a firefighter looks like in full Bunker Gear and SCBA. We look quite scary when we are suited up and in gear. If a child cant get out of a house when its on fire they will hide in all sorts of places, and saddly they
will be very quiet and think they are in trouble. When we do a search of a room with low visability we crawl on the floor with flashlights and our SCBA makes us sound like Darth Vader. Take your kids to your local fire hall that would respond to your home if it was on fire and ask one of the firefighters to put on the full gear with SCBA so your child knows that if they see this "SCARY" person in their room late at night they will know that they are there to help them....any firefighter will do this for you and we dont think this request is silly. The best plan is to have a escape plan and working smoke detectors in your home....if you arn't sure about where the smoke detectors are to be placed or how to make afire plan for your home call your local fire dept they will be happy to help thats a large part of our job....

Nursery visits
here in the UK it is common for the firemen to visit nurseries and schools all kitted out in their gear to describe what they do and show off the engines.  Kids love that it of course.
Peace

Oh my
I have never thought of it from a child's point of view a big "thing" coming at them from the smoke  would make me hide too poor littl ethings but its good that there are tv cartoons like fireman sam that dressn in their gear but yes I really should take him at the age of 2 before primary school to a fire hall

Great idea

Of course my children are quite familiar with firefighters, and their gear. Never thought that it could be frightening for an unfamiliar child-- great advise. Usually when the FFs come to the schools to educate they aren't dressed in full gear.

Also want to mention to all... along with the smoke detector, everyone should have a carbon monoxide detector.

Re: Great idea
sometimes they dress in full gear at the schools,, depends on the dept....Its easier to put on the SCBA at the hall because they are on the trucks and easy to get at....Our FPO makes sure one of us dress up in full gear when we have a group.
