Defensive driving courses...great idea for your new drivers or even for those of you who aren't........

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 11th)
Teenagers and driving

Well one day if not already the scary thought is you child will get their learners........How scary is that????........Then they will get their licence.........I don't even want to think about it......when I first learnt how to drive my parents gave me two fantastic presents.....one was membership
to the RACQ(or your local automobile club)They also gave me another thing that I think is one of the most valuable things I could have gotten......It was a voucher to a Defensive driving course.....It helped  me as a teenager to be able to better handle my car in a bad situation......This is something, the day my children get their licence that  they will be getting........

Those of us that drive like to think we are good drivers but in a bad situation would you know what to do?? How would you handle things if they suddenly went wrong????
Do you know your own car well enough?? You might be a great driver in  a perfect situation but......What if things aren't perfect??What if other drivers around you are not handling the situation well either........

The objectives of any defensive driving courses is to improve decision making and develop a positive attitude towards driving not only for your self but for others as well......In this type of course I learnt how my car and then the pie van I drove performed in an emergency and what my reactions were and you know what?? They were a little scary but well worth finding out.......And learning how to cope with it........

It is going to be scary enough for me to let my kids behind the wheel just as it was for my mother to do.....So I want my kids as prepared as possible.....Wouldn't you????

Here is a links of defensive driving courses in Australian states and territories.................

Queensland
New south wales
Victoria
South Australia
Western Australia
Tasmania
Northern Territory
ACT

After doing one of these courses myself I think they should be mandatory for everyone......Young and old.....That is how benificial it was to me and my husband.......

Who knows It might not be just a great  idea for teenagers..... but also for ourselves.......When we get in the car and load our children in we are putting our most precious items in the hands of not only ourselves but other drivers on the road as well.......

These are just my thought on something people can do to make driving a more safe experience for ourselves and others.......

Ps.......After writing this advice yesterday my children came home and told me of what had happened in the afternoon waiting for the bus.....My son had witnessed the accident.....I have since added the link for this horrible accident below........a 17 year old girl actually hit a 12 year old boy killing him instantly because she lost control of her vehicle on a corner.........we need to teach our inexperienced drivers to handle their vehicle better at all times............Hopefully this tragedy will hit home with just maybe one future driver or one parent of one.......

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Driving

Well said . . . . My father was a retired cop and then a transport inspector and I was made go through everythin before i was allowed to get my p's . . . . .

All my friends laughed at me because they all their p's and i was the last . . . .BUT since then, they've all been involved in some really avoidable accidents and i haven't . . .

The accidents incidently were mostly their faults and could have been avoided if they had been made to do what my father made me do . . . . Ppl need to slow down and drive a way safe and compatible way especially given the weather conditions at the time . . .

A dry road does not mean a safe road . . . . . lol

GREAT JOB ANG!!!

I will just stop leaving comments because

I am getting sick of repeting myself LOL GREAT ARTICLE (again) Far too many of our young drivers are being killed. I think this should be compulsary for every person getting their licence.

Agree
A car can be a deadily weapon when used in wrong hands either maliciously, or because they are amateurs just starting out. The more training given the better.
My daughter passed her driving test and then went to Iceland for 3 months where she was driving on snow, packed ice the opposite side of the road she was used to as well as rocky terrain. It did her the power of good
She is also looking into taking her Advanced Driving Test here soon
