Help! My Child can Drive a Car!!!!

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 2nd)
Just when I thought I could stop worrying so much about her
My daughter has her own car and is always out driving ?

What can the parent do to ensure our child is safe when out and independent ?

So, my daughter left here last
night to visit her boyfriend, she already said she was going to call when she got there (she knows me so well)  But an hour later I get a phone call from her saying "Hi Mum don't worry but I have broken down on the Motorway!!"
Don't Worry!!!!  Was she having a laugh?
The shortened version of the story was that she called her boyfriend who drove right over to her and picked her up, between them they got the car to a garage, but she is now looking at a possibly hefty repair bill

So Where Did It All Go Wrong ?
Why didn't I STRONGLY encourage her to get a Car Breakdown/Recovery Service for just under £40,  a basic package deal would have enabled her to call from the car, they would have sent someone straight out to her as high risk (young woman alone on hard shoulder of motorway), they would have looked at the car and tried to get it going for her and if they couldn't fix it then they would have got both her and the car back home. Instead she is already looking at £104 to pay the garage who collected the car without them even looking at it.

Basic Details

She is a clever girl my daughter when it comes to cars, she knows where the petrol goes and she knows where.........Oh sorry, thats it, she just knows where the petrol goes.
Thats a bit of injustice to her really she does also know where the water goes!!!!!!!!

We should teach our children more about their car
She should know how to check tyre pressure, she should know how to put air in the tyres, she should be capable of changing a wheel, she should know about checking the oil, she should know how to change a bulb in case she loses a light, she should know how to change a fuse......
I'm not talking about her taking a course in car mechanics
I'm talking about making sure that the car she spends so much time driving around in, is safe and roadworthy for her, and if it isn't any minor problems the knowledge to know how to handle it and put it right.

So when the car is fixed and ready and paid for and back home!!!!
I am now going to spend time with her going through EVERYTHING

I do not want to worry about her everytime she goes out in her car

This time it was too late for us to realise our mistake

Those of you with young drivers in the family
Make sure it is not too late for you

ROFL!

My ex hubby once destroyed the engine of a car because no one ever told him he had to put oil in it! It was somehting that was taken for granted and he was the one that had to pay the price.

When I got my L's, my Dad coaxed me to go out and do a basic motor maintenance course so I know how to look after the contraption I was moving around in. It has proven very useful and I'd recommend to anyone going for their licence that they find some way of learning about whatever it is they are getting the licence for - be it car, truck motorcycle, boat, or whatever. It helps heaps.

ROFL!
Great recommendation to give
Wish I had thought of it.
In this instance the head gasket had blown, so she has now bought an identical car that has a sound engine but bodywork problems, now she has a car mechanic buddy who is going to swap the engines take whatever is worth keeping from the Junk car and then donate the wreck that is left to the scrap yard
Meantime I am back to resident taxi driver

So important
everyone should know the know how of a car, I had no choice growing up, our family business was in the motor industry mind you I still am slightly stupid when it comes to under the hood!!  I remember driving along with a boyfriend once and we got a flat, we got out and he said oh no what are we going to do, I said um geez change the tyre, he replied oh I don't know how to!!!  So there I was changing a tyre with a 6ft big guy standing next to me looking on.

So important
Thats great
Bet he looked really clever
I went to a garage once years ago and it was an old fashioned one in the country, I went and asked if someone could check my tyre pressure and the man said "Yea I'll get my boy to do it'
I return to my car and a few seconds later this young kid about 10 years old ran over and said "Dad sent me to check your tyres!!!!"
Never again

Kids driving
This is a great piece of advice Helen. There'll be lots of minti parents who have driving age kids and everything you've said is so important for them to know. Unfortunately there's some things that I don't even know so I would be a bit stuck myself mind you I've had a couple of accidents too (not my fault) and that concerns me too. Mental note - must learn how to change a tyre and the fuses. Some things are best learned by doing. I must say I have been shown these things a number of times but I'm pretty sure if push came to shove I wouldn't be able to do it because 1 i've never done it before and 2 i can't remember where everything is. So before I break down on a motorway I'm going to finally give it a go myself.
Beaut advice!!!

kids can drive my car...
My dad did all that when it was my turn to go out driving...  Very important..
It's a pity my first car only lasted 6 months.. 3 weeks longer then my dad's first car...
I swear the tree jumped out in front of me...

May have been the same tree that did that to my brother
My daughter won't have anything to do with her dad so she wouldn't go to him for anything however my brothers are very protective of her and are kicking themselves they didn't show her some of those things too.
She also has a car minded boyfriend who is going to sort her out

Help my child can drive
OMG!  Thanks for reminding me that in a matter of 3-4 years I have to deal with this issue again. LOL

Good advice.  Maybe you'd like to teach my last 3 boys how to to drive?  Once was enough for me.

Help my child can drive
LOL
I would never be able to teach someone to drive, I have picked up too many bad habits which would make them fail their test!!!
My daughter went to a qualified instructor and paid for her lessons, much better idea for her. We would have fought and argued every step of the way

Help my child can drive... owns a car & is always broke!
So true... Thankfully my son has become more knowledgeable when it comes to regular car maintenance but I insisted he got road side service when he got his car. It's funny how when it comes to repairs or having the car serviced some kids never seem to have enough cash..so I agree with channy... it can be a bit un-fair on parents wallets... ps -my son is financially dependent & earns a healthy wage.

My daughter is financially dependent too which is a great relief cos I certainly can't help her
We had talked about road side help but she never got around to doing it.
She is doing it now though!!!

youngsters and cars
i do believe that any young adult from the time they get their learner permit shoud be taught all of these basic things that go wrong when you break down, not fair on the parents getting a phone call over stupid little things and also not fair on parents wallets, (when the kids are still dependant on parents)

one of the best things that helped me is the actual car manual (book) it has all the trouble shooting advice on what to do if your engine does not sound healthy and where everything goes :)
but also growing up with a rev head of a father and now having a rev head partner... i have learned alot

xx channy
