Drugs and teens...Prescription drug abuse...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 10th)
I have written a few articles on Illegal drugs and teenagers  and one about whats in your cupboards and the way kids can abuse them......Today I thought I would write about Prescription drug abuse......It is a scary fact off life.....With all of todays statistics around most of them that I
looked up on the net say that most teenagers are more likely to have abused a presciption drug than an illegal one......One reason for this could be that they just have to go to the medicine cabinet and raid  it........There are alot of things for them to get a high with......If a child abuses a prescription drug that is their parents or their grandparents then they are free to them arent they......

Children can get involved in prescription drugs in alot of ways......Really when you think about it in most kids experiental stage which is through out most kids teenage years.....They never think that their actions may have consequences the next day do they..... Most teens believe in the old saying.....I'm Ten foot tall and bullet proof....You can not predict if your child with experiment and stop and the ones who will keep going and develop a problem....We as parents are not fortune tellers even though I wish we could be.....There are some risks that have been identified which makes experimenting from one child to another more dangerous for them to become hooked so to say...........These are not definate but seem to be more likely and seem to help.......

  • Depression
  • Low self esteem/feeling like they dont fit in/or not popular
  • Aggressive and rebellious/have an attitude problem wiht figures of authority
  • A family history of substance or alcohol abuse

There are somethings we can do as parents to help this not being another teenage problem in our own homes.....We need to talk to our kids about how taking a prescription drug that is not prescribed to them can be just as dangerous to them as heroin or speed.....Pain killers and heroin have similar ingredients(both are opiates)......Tell your kids that prescription medications are powerful and they help sick people and are given by a doctor........Tell them if someone who doesn't need it takes it can become deadly.........We spend alot of time talking to our kids about illegal drugs but prescription drugs are not always something we look at discussing......Well I didn't until recenlty anyway......

The prescription drugs that are abused are stimulants Depressants and painkillers....the external link provided below is a great link and worth a read.......A fantastic site...Please when you have time take a look......

Lastly my advice to you is to put any medications that are prescribed to anyone in your home up in a safe place and only known to adults in your home.....Not in a medicine cabinet in you bathroom or in the cupboard above the fridge.....If the children know where they are they know where to look.....Not all kids will take them for a high or even think of it but taking the temptation away I always find is a good start....

Again I say as I do in most of my articles Communication is the key......Talk talk and talk some more....Build the best relationship with your child as best you can.....be open and tell them no matter what.........Or  how bad they think it is they can come to you or one of their people on their safety network(I have written about this in another article linked below)

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Just a footnote I would like to add to this.....Children who are prescribed medication for adhd/mood stabilisers/anti depressants are less likely to abuse the drug.....Just another thing I read and now can not find the link to....sorry just wanted to add this to makes sure parents do not think that medicated you child for a disorder will make them an abuser.......

Re: Drugs and teens...Prescription drug abuse...

That's really worrying for parents of teens as the teens are experimenting prescription drugs & even over the counter drugs so that they can get high. I also favor this blog on High School and it's Variables that this is the daunting scenario that we have today. We are aware of it, the government is aware of it, law enforcers are aware of it but still the nagging problem persists and threatens the fragile future of our youth today. Numbers don’t lie. Nearly half of all high school seniors in America have experimented with illegal drugs and about three quarters have tried alcohol and at least 15.4% have reported having used prescription drugs.

[p]What parents can do on their part is to periodically look on the activities of teens and similarly schools officials also check them and any irregular behaviors or health problem should monitor carefully.

Re: Drugs and teens...Prescription drug abuse...

Thanks for writing about this.  My son is just entering high school this year and I want to be aware of what he will be exposed to.  I also found some great information about teens and drugs on the Connect with Kids website.  They have pages of great, free information that might be helpful to parents.  Here are a couple in particular that I found helpful, http://www.connectwithkids.com/tipsheet/2006/282_may24/thisweek/060524_alcohol.shtml, http://www.connectwithkids.com/tipsheet/1999/30_nov10/blackout.html

Prescription abuse
(as i reach for the panadeine forte...JUST KIDDING) I hate taking any form of medication, even when i have a headache, and i just goes to show, cos i have just got over a 3 day migrain lol and took only maybe 5 tablets, and one of them got spewed up (sry guys). I even hate taking my compulsory meds for my epilepsy!
Great article angie! Too many people out there are abusing prescription privileges and take them all at once and find that when they really need them, they have none left! VERY DANGEROUS PEOPLE

Great article. I also agree with your footnote.
My sister was on Dexamphetamine for years. When she came off she didnt touch it again. I however tried it, liked it and took it a fair bit.

legal drugs
Angie you wrote this so well. My little sister had a bad addiction to prescription pills. She found a doctor, (very dodgy one) that prescribed any thing. she over dosed 18 times in 6 weeks and ended up in ICU each time. We went to see this "Dr" but he just wouldn't stop, It was a horrid situation to be in. Short of either chaining her or spending hours watching the Dr surgery there was nothing that we could do. We seen plenty of young kids going in and out and then to the chemist next door where you could "book up" the pills, it was so sad. No one seemed able to help us.But yes we had to hide everything, panodol, antibiotics, blood pressure pills everything, we ended up leaving most medications with friends and only leaving enough to do very little if she ever found them. Well done on informing people on this subject. Oh we also had to stop buying all things in aerosol cans, fly spray, deoderent, etc they where just as lethal at the time to her.

Well written angie,

Perscription drugs are one of the most abused drugs there is. I grew up around so many people who would take it and even in my adult life I am all so aware of the problem that is out there.

Great artlice once again angie

Great article...

Wolonfab's Article 'Ritalin, adhd, bipolar & other disorders...The other side of the story...' had a section in it which read 'Most people who take stimulant medication to treat their AD/HD do not abuse it. As a matter of fact, the greater problem is that they forget to take it.'... I'm sure she can give you the link to the information if you ask her.

for this to come back out from quarantine so i could vote on it!
i had friends in school that used prescription drugs as their way out of dealing with things, thanks for this advice Angie, as it will help parents spot if this is happening with their own.

Hiya Channy......It was something I had not thought about teaching my children about and I really think it should be out here for sure........I am really into telling my children of all the dangers of all the bad stuff out there for them because just by starting a conversation on drugs and stuff with your teens you will be amazed just how much they are mis informed about and what they already know.....I would rather they had the facts from me than the school yard....Thanks for your comment matey.......
Cheers
Angie
