Please Tell Me Our Story

MelodyS by MelodyS Talking Back(February 2007) (rank 210th)
Through family stories children learn family traits as well as about the world of people around them.  Are you passing family memories and lessons to your child?  Or are you intimidated by storytelling?  I find curling up all snuggled in the bed with my boys or munching a snack
around the kitchen table to be equally perfect spots for sharing our stories.  The important thing is to share the stories.  Some ways to lessen any intimidation you may feel in storytelling...
  • Think about your audience:  Who is my kid?  What does my child like?  What issues is he/she dealing with right now?
  • Talk about your life:  Kids love hearing adults talk about "when I was a kid..."  And they especially like hearing about our "firsts" - first day of school, first time you rode a bike.
  • Tell them stories about themselves:  They cannot remember being a baby or many of their earlier childhood experiences.  Tell them about The Day You Were Born, How You Got Your Name, You Used to Do This Funny thing.
  • Use family photos and mementos:  Bring out the props.  They love old family photos and baby photos of themselves.  Do you have a family heirloom with an interesting story?  Use treasured mementos.  Share the item as well as the story.
  • Make story-time special:  Set aside a regular time for storytelling.  Light candles, arrange a comfy area of pillows on the floor...make it memorable.
Storytelling brings family members together and truly is a bonding experience.

Do you regularly tell your child family stories?  What are some of your story-time rituals?

History

Family History I think is really important .  I have been tracing my family tree and I remember the stories my grand mother used to tell me, but there are so many things about history that are exciting.  I learn't that I have a distant relative that was in Napoleons Army as well as being Govenor of two Islands so pass on as much information as you can it makes for great show and tells at school.

Love This!

My daughter loves hearing stories about when I was little, and about when she was little.

I find some of the best ones are ones that are prompted by something she does, or is going to do and I can say "I did that when I was little!"

Story Telling with Family Photo's

When my children were younger I made up a little scrapbook with photo's of my father and other people close to me who were absent in my childrens life, either through death or distance. Each photo was used as a part of a story introducing them to the kids and explaining little but important details fo their life.

My kids would ask for me to read the 'My Family' book and loved just looking at photos while listening to the 'true' stories of each charachter.

It was a great way to keep family members alive and close to my children.....

Cheers

OB

Story Telling with Family Photo's
Beautiful idea!  I need to do this because we are far enough away that the boys do not see extended family often enough.
