Special ideas to help you celebrate your child's life

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 167th)
On Saturday we celebrated Ethan's second birthday.  We wanted everyone who came to his party to see how much he had grown over the last year and we also wanted him to know how much we love him.  So these were some the decorating ideas we used.
  • Lots of pictures
--I printed up pictures of Ethan from his first birthday all the way up until last Saturday.  Then I cut out construction paper and mounted the pictures on each side of the construction paper.  I punched a hole in the top of the paper and then I hung the 2-sided pictures from the ceiling at different heights with curling ribbon.  I ended up having about 80 pictures of Ethan hanging in the living room for his party.  He was so excited to see all the pictures and his dad carried him around to show him every single one.  He then told him the story of what was happening when the picture was taken.  We still have the pictures hanging in the living room now and it was a great thing to have when we brought our new baby home.  It reminded Ethan that even though he has a new little brother, Mom and Dad love him very much.
  • Helium balloons--I also purchased an inexpensive helium tank and was able to decorate with approximately 50 balloons that were on the ceiling in between the pictures.  I tied long curling ribbon to the balloons so that even the shortest guest could reach up and grab down the balloon of her choice.  The balloons were a hit and every child got to take some home with him.
  • Cupcakes for the kids and cheesecake for the grownups--while everyone likes a little cake, sometimes you just want something a little more rich.  I made cupcakes for all the kids and then made a cheesecake and chocolate-covered strawberries for the grownups.  What a fantastic treat and it made the party a little more parent-friendly.

Birthdays
Photos: -I did those for both my older children on their 18th birthday parties, we had picture boards of them from birth to then scattered around the room, it was great, so many memories and also tried to include pictures of them with as many of the guests coming to the party as possible.
Over the 18 years it was hysterical watching everyones reaction to some of the photos
xx

That's my dream.  I want to just add to the pictures every year until maybe his graduation?  How fun.  I'm sure everyone enjoyed seeing all those pictures spanning the years.

If you get the chance to do it, I would highly recommend it.  It makes for such a happy feeling.  I don't know how else to explain how you feel when you realize that the first year has gone by and you all made it successfully.  Have a great party!
