Babyproof Your Toilet

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(February 2007) (rank 95th)
Today's first time parenting tip - Babyproof your toilet. Yes, your toilet.

When our son discovered there was water he could splash around in the toilet bowl, it was over. Whenever the bathroom door is open, he makes a beeline. If my wife or I are taking a shower,
he'd crawl over hot coals to play in the water. He just loves water, bottom line.

Now, the toilet isn't the most sanitary thing in our house. Even when he couldn't lift up the seat, we'd throw a towel over it if he was in there so he couldn't come into contact with all the germs living all over it.

But now he's figured out how to get past our defenses and is strong enough to actually lift up the seat. Luckily, there are toilet seat latches out there to keep him from playing in the water.

I wouldn't have thought of this on my own until he proved to me that he can get into anything. Is there something your baby gets into that you never would have thought to worry about?

toilet problem
i might not have to worry when me son starts walking. i can just shut the toilet door, it has a high door handle, so as long as we close the door, he wont be able to get it. thanks for the advice

Oh man!  I can just imagine it!  Thankfully we have not had this problem, but I remember when i was younger someone had that fascination!  It was who could get there fast enough to rescue the baby!!!
oh dear, thank you for the reminder of those memories
Peace

Baby proofing the toilet
Thank you! I would never have thought to put a towel over it. My guy just needs to touch the outside of the bowel, try's to climb up on it you name it. Since he started crawling we keep all doors closed except when we are in there, privacy is a long forgotten thing with him around. I hate the thought of him touching the loo and guaranteed those little hands will be straight in his mouth.

Baby proofing the toilet
Well i'm glad to see my son isn't the only one who likes the toilet water.   I have much to my dismay found all sorts of things in our toilets at home from 4 rolls of new toilet paper (all sopping wet from soaking up the water) to hair brushes, shoes, toys and yes ladies our private things.   My son has found ways of making his sneaking way into the closed door rooms to throw our household items into the bowl.   Is its just that little boys like to get dirty!!!!!!!

LOL my son loves the toilet.. LOL   Thankfully I have a door that can lock from the outside... When we got the bathroom door handles you need a little key to open them from the outside... So this is great, of course you have to keep the key close and where a visitor can find it because well it is a pain in the bum if someone moves the little key and you really need to go... :)

Toilet seat latches...
Although I totally agree with you that they are a great Idea, with this particular latch I ended up having to lock the bathroom door from the outside (which thankfully I can do) because I have been unable to find one like that that sticks for a long period...  It came unstuck with in about two weeks... And I realized that it was not closed at all just looked like it was.. The sticky stuff wore really quickly.. May work for some, but I am afraid it did not work for us...

But it would not hurt to give it a try as we did...

toilet latches

Luckily our daughter never wanted to play in the toilet water, as she always had enough water in a big bowl in the laundry to play with but every child is different.
