Creepy crawlies,bugs and snakes

Marglr by Marglr Talking Back(February 2007) (rank 26th)

Oh,here I am! Not really good at giving advice but several events in the past have stayed on my mind so here goes! I think it very important and valuable to teach children about everything in our world. This includes the wonderful world of bugs, creepy crawlies and reptiles. In the

grocery store a while back this dear little boy went into shock almost at the sight of a spider. His reaction was severe. I scooped the spider into my hand and he looked terrified,I smiled at him and extended my hand just a bit so he could see the spider exploring my hand. He looked at my eyes,I knew what he was looking for because at that moment his Mom saw what I had in my hand and screamed. He was looking for fear in my eyes. I think the cues we send, even if involuntary to our kids shape them. It is not the intention of any one to set their child on a path of fear. I've watched my son grab snakes up to show kids in the conservation areas we go to. A child will take in so much once the uncertainty of the unknown is washed away.  I didn't get comfortable with snakes until my sons started bring them home. All ceatures are amazing if you stop to think and give them a chance. This may be far fetched to some who harbour those fears themselves but...here are some examples of where it leads. My friend had her licence removed..there was a spider on the dash and she drove into a ditch, the judge said the unreasonable fear she had prevented safe operation of a car as spiders were often in cars. A friend goes to a cottage but not to the waterfront as there might be snakes. Friends of ours go into the bathroom before their little girl to sweep for bugs because there was a caterpillar in there once, cute they thought,we're keeping her safe, now she won't go into any bathroom and her first year at child care was not good. I know it's hard to keep reactions that are triggered by fear under control and some seem to think that these fears are reasonable and should be passed on for protection but you really got to stop and think. Hope my point has come across the proper way and I think creepy crawlies, bugs and snakes need all the friends they can get!!!

So...as all Great Mommies do,I have been told by some good ones that Australia is different, don't worry I still have to visit even though I now know that your insects and creepy crawlies and snakes are tough. I assumed that all exploring adventures would be under an knowledgeable elder so that should have been mentioned too! See! Giving advice is not my strong point!

Hi Sandra
Ha,ha,did you read Ozblinky's ??? So funny! But at least you remove the poor little(or huge) spiders and give them a chance, lots kill them! Do you know what made you react this way? Would be interesting to see. In humid climates they trace it back to women protecting their babies, where the spiders could be poisonous!

Respect
Teach kids to respect all living creatures, give them space and not to frighten them.  Small kids and toddlers shouldn't touch any creatures without an adult present.  They are too young to judge what is safe and what isn't, they are also too small to defend themselves if required.  This applies to everything, crawlies, wild life, and domestic animals - they can all be loved from a distance, and under supervision.

Oh, Crystalmoon, if you say snake in the grass to Jaydee - he immediately stops what he is doing and stamps his feet - 'stamp your feet, so he can feel you, if he knows your there, he won't go near you' thanks to Bindi's Kidsfitness. Steve Irwin has done a lot to make us more aware of the wonderful creatures we share our planet with

Respect
I forgot to say that I agree with you entirely in principle - you can tell which parents are afraid of spiders etc, by the way their kids react.  Poor kids never had a chance!

Respect
Hi!!! Yup, kiddies and those that aren't experienced in how to handle creatures can still admire them from afar. In fact it's better that way! The animals are not thrilled to have some giant hand coming at them...I'd panic and bite too!!! I know this family watched everything Steve Irwin did and his passion and love came through the screen.

Ohhhh
I love all creepy crawlies LOL  I have passed this onto my daugter she loves spiders, snakes, bugs and caterpillars.I used to have a terrible job trying to get her not to pick these things up LOL. We watch steve irwin crocodile hunter in his dvd with the wiggles,he has a song about snakes.chorus "You can look but you better not touch"wave bye bye danger danger danger (repeat this 2-3 times in a warbling voice)and do a few swivels and it is very entertaining and educational PMSL  Now she is a tad older she handles critters that I deem non venomous. We have dvd's and I teach her what our venomous creatures look like and then we search around outside for them. I used to keep reptiles and scorpions. Hugs Crystal

Hi Crystal!
I felt so bad because I wrote this from our view here and never thought about the fact we have like next to no nasty venomous creatures to watch out for!!! (one rattlesnake, and you give bears wide passage!!!) Steve Irwin's loss is felt world wide. He sure left a wonderful wife and daughter to carry on his dream.

Creepy crawlies....

I have the best way to deal with bugs and spiders.....

  1. RUN
  2. RUN MORE
  3. RUN FURTHER AWAY
  4. SCREAM WHILE YOU RUN
  5. SCREAM MORE WHILE YOU RUN FURTHER
  6. SREAM, RUN, AND YELL FOR YOUR NEIGHBOUR FOR HELP

This way you are not near the danger, you don't use any chemicals, unless some escape from you while you're running away and when you arrive home - well your fitter and the danger is gone.

But your way is good too.....

Great article matey

Creepy crawlies
I understand what your saying but some kids such as mine have no sense of fear and I am personally afraid that oneday they may pick up something that shouldn't be touched. If they taught the difference then go for it.

Creepy crawlies
Hi 4boyz! For sure! Are you from Australia? The things here are far and few that can do harm but you must know the difference. My daughter in her field studies came across a Missassauga Rattler, the one poisonous snake in Ontario,Canada! She took pictures or we probably would have said "Ya,sure!" but she's got the proof and was smart enough to give distance!

I think you write great advice!

We live in the mountains/forest and my boys are boys in every sense of the word.  We have taught them all about creatures, respecting them and which ones are dangerous.  I am so glad I am not a mom who freaks and am so glad I was a tomboy growing up.  I love that my boys love nature.

Creepy crawlies
I remember one day when I did freak out! I was caught off guard when my laundry started moving. Northeren red bellied snake! Beautiful thing once it was in a jar to be returned to the great outdoors. I'm with you I think it opens a different world to respect everything, no matter!

I think

all children should be informed and informed well about the bugs creepy crawlies and reptiles. Here in Australia it is so very important that children know about these creatures. Great article.

I think
Thanks, but it took Wendigo's gentle reminder that I was talking about my area only!  I should have been more careful it's just that nature and all it's wonders has played such a huge part in our lives, our lives as a family and what some of my kids ended up doing! You have some interesting critters your way!

You're right...

The way we react to things certainly does teach our kids to react the same way, and that can cause problems.  But, I think if you lived in some of the places I have with the native wildlife as it is, I think you'd be shying away from snakes and spiders too.  There are some species you certainly wouldn't be picking up and living to write about, that's for sure! lol.  You're lucky to live in such a nice place where snakes and spiders don't hurt so much.  Not that I'm scared of them, but I certainly wouldn't want my kids trying to pick them up and bring them home!
