How To Get Your Kids To Eat... VEGGIES

Anonymous Author (February 2007)
A lot of people have trouble getting their kids to eat vegies. I thought I would throw some ideas out there...

Get them involved.

  • Let them have a vegie patch. They can plant water and pick the veg when they are ripe. This will not
only teach them about gardening and growing foods but it will half with healthy living.
  • Let them help prepare. Its so much fun cooking with kids. Let them grate a carrot. Top and tail a snow pea. Things like this.
  • Let them help pick out the vegies at the supermarket. Give them a little list of say 5 vegies to get some of.

Duisguise it.

  • Make some Spaghetti Bolognaise. Chop up some vegies finely (like capsicum, onion, carrot, broccoli, eggplant etc) and add it to the sauce at te end till soft. The kids wont notice its there and will be getting the nutrients :)
  • Mash it in with the potatoe. We all know MOST kids love mashed potato. So why not cook some pumpkin, sweet potato or broccoli up and throw it in their and mash together.
  • Why not make a pizza. Kids LOVE pizza and if its home made you can put a lot of vegies on it. Chances are they will eat it without even thinking twice.
  • Food colouring in mashed potato will work wonders. Why not have green potatoe. Red? Blue!
  • Gravy and cheese sauce make everything taste SO MUCH BETTER!
Make it LOOK interesting

  • Why not make a face. Kids love that.
  • What about cutting out the veg into shapes.
  • Try one of each colour. Pink sweet potatoe, orange pumpkin, white potato, green broccoli, red capsicum... it needs to look appealing to taste good :)

Eating veggies
Such a challenge with all ages.  I only have one good veggie eater out of 4 and he's no longer in the house!

Great stuff!
We mix veggies in our son's eggs, burger, etc. He even likes vegetables in yogurt, which I find particularly disgusting. Whatever it takes!
