If any of the other relaxation techniques worked for you
Then here are three more to try:
The Toe Tensing One
When you alternatively tense and then relax your toes you can actually draw the tension down from the rest of your body
Lie
on your back with your eyes closed
Wiggle your toes around
Now pull all 10 toes back up towards your face
Slowly count to 10
Next, relax all your toes
Count again to 10 slowly
Repeat this cycle 10 times
You should have felt all the tenseness leave your body and flow through your toes
Using Guided Imagery
The goal on this technique is to visualise yourself in a peaceful setting
Lie on your back and close your eyes
Imagine yourself in a favourite, peaceful place. For instance it may be lying on a sunny beach with the ocean breeze flowing over you. Visualise any place that you find peaceful and relaxing.
As you imagine yourself there, see and feel everything around you, hear the sounds, smell the aromas, feel the warmth and any other sensations that come to you. Just relax and take it all in as you relax
You can return at any time to this visual place, in fact the more you do this the more you will find it easier to fall asleep as the image becomes part of your sleep conditioning
Some people find it also works to visualise something particularly boring such as a College Lecture, a neighbour who chats for the sake of it etc etc
The Quiet Ears Technique
Lie on your back and close your eyes
Put your hands behind your head and make sure your arms can stay relaxed
Place your thumbs in your ears so that you shut off the ear canal
You should hear a high pitched rushing sound.
This is perfectly normal
Keep listening to this sound for the next 10 - 15 minutes
Then put your arms slowly down by your sides, tense and relax your arms
Gently drift off to sleep
I hope that some of you will find these techniques of great benefit to you.
After all we all need to RELAX
