Common Childhood Illnesses... Chicken Pox

Anonymous Author (February 2007)
What is it?

Chicken Pox is a viral infection that is very common and highly contagious. It is caused when your child breaths in the air that a infected person breathes out through cough or sneeze. It's usually mild and doesnt often have any side effects.

What are the symptoms?

Chicken Pox is diagnosed by an extremely itchy red mozzie bite looking blisters. The infected child will usually have a temperature. Sometimes they may get ulsers in the mouth or vagina.

What is the treatment?

Pintarsol/oatmeal/baking soda bathes are common treatment and help with the itchiness. Panadol or painkillers of the like for the temperature. Calamine lotion is also used to reduce itchiness.
Vaccination is available now for children.

Is it contaigious?

Highly. Its contagious even before the rash appears.

There are some complications for young babies, pregnant mothers and anyone with a low immune system. So please see your doctor if you fall into this category or your child  does.

My boy had the chickn pox at 3 he gave it to his sister who was 15 and ended up in hospital (she did) !!!! He also gave it to me.... Wish I had realised he had not been immunised. I was ignorant I guess and thought that it was covered with the ones that you have at birth, 2 mths etc etc...
