Childhood Illnesses... Rota Virus

Anonymous Author (February 2007)
What is it?

Rota virus is a virus that causes vomiting, temperatures and severe diarrhea. It is a major cause of childhood deaths. Children with this get severe gastro and loose fluids very fast. If your child is under 2 it is very dangerous.

What
are the symptoms?

It usually starts as a temperature and vomiting or sore tummy. Then comes the diarrhea. Its watery and will usually last a week or 2. When its severe they can get  very dehydrated very fast so if your child is under 2 please take them to the hospital immediately. The dehydration assosiated with Roto Virus can result in death.

What is the treatment?

Babies and young children that get sick and dehydrated may need to go to hospital and put on an IV for fluids. Most older children can be looked after at home. You will not get antibiotics for RotoVirus because its a virus.
Home treatment is lots of fluid and rest.

Is it contagious?

YES! It is extremely contagious. It passes on the poo of the infected person or child even before they have any symptoms of having the illness. It is often passes through children if they put their hands in their mouths after touching something that is infected with the germ. So always wash your hands and your childs hands reguarly!

Chilhood Virus-Rota Virus...
Thankyou mel for a great article, and yes we need to be careful with this awful bug as it is quite dangerous in young ones...I never knew what it was until my caitlyn got it 3 years ago and spent a week in hospital, and the scary thing was it just hit her so hard, that there were no syptoms before that, as we thought at first it was food poisoning as we had being out at the car racing all day....But no the doc said it was raging through our town and the hospital was full of kids with it.... I really hope that the govt put it on the free immunisation as i have 3 kids so for me that is 1800 dollers , to keep them well, but when does cost come into it, to keep our children well, its not good at all...

scrub right under them fingy-nails too:)
Staying clean (not freak clean) but clean enough can help alot, reminding other children to wash their hands before they can touch the baby, making sure all bottles and teats are squeaky-clean. my son caught Severe gastro from his cousin, was the season! he couldn't be seen by emergency because it was packed with children ALL with the same virus!
Great article MADMEL, keep up the great work!

Saw this on the news today
Now is the season for this too....there is an immunisation for it but it costs like 200 dollars or something and some one is trying to get the government to make it free due to the amount of young kids that do catch it and end up in hospital....Great article Mel
Cheers
Angie

yeh but the horrible thing is that 3 vaccine shots are required, so its like $600, imagine what it would be like for a family with 5 kids?
