First time Shaving....

OzBinky by OzBinky Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 15th)

When you’re a single mum to a boy, more so when there is no male figure in your life, there are a few things you have to educate yourself on so as you can teach them all the right and useful ‘life skills’ there is to know. One

of the things I found I had to brush my knowledge up on was shaving. I knew how to shave my legs and underarms but I didn’t have the first clue it if was the same for a male shaving his face. Not only that, if anyone saw the way I shaved you wouldn’t want me teaching anyone. So off I went to brush up on the skills of shaving…

When I first started teaching my son how to shave I used a bladeless razor. I just brought a one of those razors with disposable heads and used the blank plastic spacer which are normally included in the box or already attached to the razor. I thought it would be a better idea to do this then chance the first time cuts…I was just as new at this as he was.

Shaving

Make sure your son understands about stretching the skin using facial expressions, mouth and jaw movements. He’ll need to do this when shaving. Also, take notice of what way the hair is growing as you should always shave in that direction. Hair my also grow in different directions and depending on where on the face at the time. Remember to get him to rinse the bade every couple of strokes and NEVER EVER use blunt or rusty razors.....NEVER EVER

Wet the face with warm water to soften skin and open the pores. Doing this actually helps get that closer shave and is why it is better to save straight after a shower. Apply shaving cream to the face, mouth area and neck

Slowly and softly start at the side of the face using short strokes. Make sure to stress about applying only a slight amount of pressure to begin with and work yourself up to a more firm one. It’s better than taking the skin off straight away.

Once that is done move to around the mouth and neck. Try and get your son to stretch the skin so as to flatten the area and so that the razor can glide easier. Remind him again to use small strokes in the same direction as the hair growth.

I was told that when shaving around the mouth that it was best to shave from the nose down towards the lip as it was safer especially when just learning. When that’s done rinse the face with cold water so as to close the pores and if he wants to put a little aftershave on….talk him out of it! LOL…

If you get him to do this every couple of days it will hopefully get him into a routine and he’ll master it in no time and when he’s used of it, move onto a ‘real’ razor.

Anyway, that was my little ‘how to shave’ rant I gave my son. This may not be the best shaving example around but it worked and I was pretty pleased with myself too.

Also for a bit of fun history you can visit Quick Shave website where it gives you all the old shaving techniques as well as reasons why people started shaving to begin with…

Cheers

Do girls have hairy chins?

MY two boys aren't old enough for that yet but its good advice. Though with some of the women in my family th girls might have to shave too!

Wish someone had shown me how to do the legs etc when younger. I can remember the chunks taken out off knees and ankles to this day. I know the face is tricky but in terms of surface area the girls have it ...

Ooooh! What memories.
I remember the first time I shaved a man.  He was in a nursing home and needed assistance with most things.  He was the 'bleeder',didnt matter what you did, he always bled.  Of course, they neglected to tell me this (thankfully).  I shaved the fella, dressed him and got him down to brekky, it was like my second day working on the care team there.  He was spotless, no cuts.  Dont ask how, cuz I dunno i was 16 and I only ever nicked him once in all the time i worked there.  Needless to say I got to do him every early shift.  LOL.

Shaving needs tight skin and a decent razor.  Plenty of soap or whatever you choose to use and dont rush.
I dont envy anyone this task....lol.  Shaving is such a messy thing to do huh.  I was out this evening and the 8 year old in the house had experimented with shaving her legs this week, she is all smooth and soft, but also covered in cuts!  Poor kid, and they keep rubbing against her trousers.

Gotta be sure of what you are doing and please dont let children near your razor!  Too often they try to copy mummy and daddy and hurt themselves.
Peace
EF.x
