More Reasons to Avoid Dope - dispelling the myths.

Anonymous Author (February 2007)

I have heard many people of all ages make excuses for their "right" to smoke cannibis, also called marajuana, dope, skunk, and a miriad of other names.   In this advice I'll call it dope - it's easier to type.    I'm going to shoot down these excuses

so that when your teenager gives them to you, you know how to respond.  If you are a user yourself, you may want to take another look at the realities and realise that what you have believed for so long is just pro-dope propaganda.

It's not addictive like other drugs.

It is commonly recognised that gambling is addictive.  If something that contains no external chemical stimulas can be addictive, what stops dope from being addictive?  Sure, the chemical addiction to the THC might not be as vicious as that of nicotine or the chemicals in other drugs.  However, the chemically induced feelings of relaxation and euphoria can be psychologically addictive, and psychological addictions are harder to break than physical ones.

After a few hours, the nicotine in a tobacco smoker's system is gone.  The physical addiction is well and truely broken after a day or two.  However, it's the psychological addiction that keeps the smoker craving that next cigarette.  The same with alcohol addiction, once the alcohol has been broken down and the person is sober, it's the psychological addiction that gets them drinking again.  Dope remains in a person's system for up to three months.  The longer the person has been smoking it on a regular basis, the longer it may remain in their system.  If alcohol and nicotine can loose the physical addiction so quickly, but the psychological addiction is so strong, why on earth would any one try to claim that dope isn't addictive, when it creates greater mind-altering sensations, remains in the body longer, and can be just as psychologically addictive like any other thing?

To believe that dope can't be addictive is not only ignorant and naive, it's downright absurd.

You can't overdose from it.

It is possible to die as a result of taking too many paracetamol tablets, absorbing too much nicotine, even taking too much vitamin A.  THC is just another toxin, and too much of it can cause an overdose.  The potential results of a THC overdose include, but are not restricted to:

  • Increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, heart attack, death.
  • Depression, paranoid psychosis, and mental illness which may be permanent.

These are not very nice things to suffer.  One small cone of strong enough dope can be enough to create an overdose - I've seen it happen.  Overdose can occur not just from smoking too much, too stong, too fast; but also from absorbing it in other ways, such as by eating too many dope cookies.  It's not produced and tested in a strictly monitored and controlled hi-tech laboratory, so exactly how much THC is contained within that little bud is anyone's guess.  You don't know how much THC you might absorb, so you have no idea whether or not it might be enough to overdose you.

It doesn't cause the same sort of damage that tobacco smoking does.

One of the greatest causes of damage to lungs with tobacco smoking is simply the heat.  We don't notice it much because our lungs don't have heat sensing nerves like our skin does.  However, our lungs do have tiny little hairs, called avioli, that are sensitive to heat and are very easily destroyed by hot air.  Because the smoke is created by burning the cigarette, and smokers inhale the smoke, the smoke is hot enough to singe and destroy these little hairs; causing significant damage and reducing our lungs ability to keep themselves clean and absorb oxygen.  Dope is also most commonly inhaled as smoke, and even when smoked through a water bong, it is still hot enough to create the same damage.  Having water in the bottom of a bong makes absolutely no difference with regards to making it any healthier to smoke.

Let's look at a bit of basic high school chemistry for a minute.  All organic matter - that's everything that has ever lived - contains carbon.  Hence the term "carbon based life forms".  Regardless of whether it is tobacco, dope, a gum tree, or a animal carcass - even a jellyfish! - if we burn it, the heat acts as a catalyst for the oxygen in the air (which is needed for the burning process to occur) to bond with the carbon in the substance that is burning.  This chemical reaction creates carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) = considered to be the two most harmful chemicals found in a cigarette.  So, if dope is plant matter, plant matter is organic, burning organic matter can create CO and CO2, and if CO and CO2 are harmful, how does that make dope harmless?

The tar in tobacco smoking is known to clog up our lungs.  What many people don't think about is what that tar really is.  It's the oily residue that is created when plant matter is burned, and it contributes a lot towards the colouration of smoke.  Tobacco tar is commonly seen as the feint brownish stains on the walls and ceilings of a room where smoking has been common place for a long period of time.  We don't notice it much unless we have been involved in the arduous chore of washing it off those walls and ceilings, or we watch those anti-smoking adds on television.  However, dope creates a lot more tar than tobacco does.  Most people don't realise that, because when talking about dope, it's not called tar - it's called resin.  As well as creating a lot of resin, many dope smokers recycle that resin and smoke it too.  Just imagine what that is doing to clog up their lungs!

Many people might resort to the arguement that tobacco goes through a chemical process that makes it contain small amounts of harmful, and cancer causing, chemicals.  And dope doesn't?  Most of the dope that hits the streets now days has been hydroponically grown.  The plants have been regularly sprayed with all manner of chemicals to aid in their rapid growth, most of which are extremely toxic.  The containers have large warning labels on them about how dangerous the chemicals are.  Some of them can't even be handled safely without the person using them wearing fully protective clothing and a gas mask!  These chemicals are absorbed by the plants, the residue of these chemicals remains on the plants, and no one washes the plants before drying and processing them.  Now days, dope contains about as many harmful chemicals as tobacco, and in some cases, the chemicals are in fact a lot worse and in higher quantities.

According to statistics, more people die from smoking related deaths than from dope smoking related deaths.  True or False?  We simply can not tell.  Most people that smoke dope also smoke tobacco.  So when they get sick and go to the doctor, they admit they smoke tobacco but won't admit to the dope.  As such, the doctor puts their illnesses and inevitable death down to smoking tobacco rather than linking it to smoking dope.  When we also consider that far less people smoke dope, of course the statistics won't read accurately.  Simply put, there is no real way of telling how many people have died from dope smoking related illness, as it always get linked to tobacco smoking, and we have no real way of determining how many people smoke dope to begin with.  Consequently, trying to say that no one dies from dope smoking related illness is again, ignorant and naive.

It has medical benefits.

Yes it does - it keeps doctors and morticians employed!  Seriously though, there is no condition or illness that exists that doesn't have a pharmicudical prescription medication - that has less nasty side effects - available that will treat it far better.  Ultimately, it is just another excuse to get high.  Many years ago that statement may have held true for a few things, but not any more.  Any one that tries to use this arguement has not done any research on the up-to-date medications and treatments used for those conditions and illnesses.

I would certainly hope that the articles that have already been written about this drug have been enough to make people realise that this drug is not a good thing, and that there are very good reasons why it is illegal.  I'm hoping that this article will help parents effectively counteract the excuses and reasons that their children will hear about why people think it is okay to smoke dope.

Re: More Reasons to Avoid Dope - dispelling the myths.

Hey, nice article. However, I have to disagree with the addiction and no medical benefits parts. I smoked weed for 2 years quite a lot. I decided to quit though because I didn't want to spend money on it, and I didn't want to get caught. It was easy as pie to quit. So I can't agree with your saying its very psycholically addictive, though for others, it may be. I can't say.

Also, it does have medical benefits. Ask someone who has cancer or has an injury that causes them pain every day for the rest of their life. In the time I smoked I hurt my arm and whenever I smoked the pain mostly went away, not completely but to the point where I almost didn't notice it. Normal pain killers I had been prescribed were not nearly as effective as marijuana.

Just my two cents, but still good article, and it's defiently a good thing to not have young people smoking weed :)

Like the person said below depends on the user but not everything you say is true such as death from weed overdose is possible but unrealistic but then again you can overdose from water "Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning)"  If your not a biased pig and like to read other views check this article out http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj007.htm

Re: More Reasons to Avoid Dope - dispelling the myths.

Great article. My partner goes off because my family are cigarette smokers but thinks it's ok that his parents can't get up in the morning without having a cone. At least my mum goes outside, they dont and they have 3 kids living there.

Cheers Dee.

such a great article
I was wondering how I could put that to my teens especially when there are so many people in there lives that smoke this drug as adults and feel that they are not addicted but just love to relax with it. I am having this kind of battle right now that it is so accepted in my area. I wanted to change schools but it would probably be there too.
Thank you.

Mind Altering Drug
My daughter's father is an addict. He has openly admitted it. His doctors and counsellors all know that he just can't give it up. He knows that the only way I will allow him to see his daughter is if he gives it up.  He can't. Not even for the sake of his children.  Yet the reason he is reliant on it is because he's depressed about not seeing his children! Go figure.  He has told many people he is addicted to dope yet it still is commonly seen as 'non-addictive' for some reason.  My daughter's father is not in very good health, he knows it's because he lives of dope, cigarettes, coke and weetbix, but he won't change the way he is.  Thankyou for putting it straight, even if it take half the night to read! Glad you included so much info.

very adictive
My friend is totally reliant on pot, he cant handle things at all if he is strait, you cant even talk to him if he isnt stoned, he'll just snap, It is very sad. But on the medical benefits of pot, an old friend of mine(now dead) had emphysema, she got told buy her lung dr that cooking with mull relaxed her airways enough to breath, it did help her. though there is a moral here... if she didn't smoke pot in the first place she wouldn't have had emphysema. well done wendigo for breaking some common myths about so called "natural" drugs.

Dope Smoking
I myself was addicted so I know true well its addictive. The thing that stopped me was I got pregnant. Only after you stop smoking it all the time do you realise just how addictive it is. I know I was spending up to hundreds of dollars a week on my dope habit and its somewhere that I dont want to be again. If you smoke drugs your an idiot! I know i was lol What makes it worse is when people smoke it around the kids and still believe they have no problem. Get help! And to the member who voted this down u need help! This is nothing less than an excellent article! Just because you think you dont need to know about drugs... that is ignorant and a pathetic reason to target anti drug advice. If you dont like it, dont read it and certanely dont rate it down!

It is addictive
Only a dope smoker would say it's not addictive, I know I did when I was addicted!!! Forget the health reason that it can cause, it can be financially & socially crippling, I lost all my friends except the dope smokers of course and financially hit rock bottom, I used any means of getting money for my dope, except illegally, if we had no food and $100 we would use it for dope if thats not been addicted I don't know what is.  I had many friends all dope smokers and they to were all severely addicted, some lied to their partners, some smoked while pregnant not because they were horrible bad scummy people, they were beautiful people that came from lovely families but were addicted to dope.  If the dealer could not get any you would wait by the phone waiting for that phone call, hoping it would ring.  It is addictive and whoever voted this down to average is ignorant or a dope smoker.  Well done, fantastic article, something ALL parents should know

Ignorant or dope smoker.
I know exactly who voted it down, and I also know she has gone out of her way to vote down a large number of other anti-drug advice on Minti.  She has already commented on one of those advice articles and admitted she prefered to remain ignorant.  Make of that what you will, but I'm sure that most people will draw the same conclusion as you did.  I hope she realises how that makes her look.  I certainly don't want to be associated with anyone that appears to be pro-drug or so terribly apathetic.  I would hope that she will realise what image she is portraying by doing this and will correct the problem.

absolutly true
the excuses that come out of some people's mouths for smoking anything are pathetic. i've heard them all and it sickens me that with all this information out there that they can still put that crap in their bodies... i've had many a debate about this topic and i have given up trying to convince these people simply because they are so parinoid that i'm having a dig at them and concequently they don't listen. (athe paranoia is the worst side effect to deal with) i've even had to tell people not to smoke that stuff near my kids...

Maybe your not on drugs but your sure on something
It seems to me that if you don't like the topic and are sick of TRYING TO TELL PEOPLE what are you doing reading this. Some people have real problems and some people care about others I personally think it's very rude of you to say this Because nobody is perfect and haven't you heard the saying "He without sin let him cast the first stone", this suggests that nobody is perfect and I doubt whether you are either . I always skim through the q&a and the articles  their even some about the same subject but written in a different format but if i don't like the topic or if it doesn't relate to me at the time I don't go and write that it's pathetic JUST BECAUSE I DON"T LIKE IT.Their are other Minti goers who might need this advice or it just might teach us to be aware a bit more or it could be a simple reminder and if anyone gets anything from this advice good for you because isn't that what the intention of anyone writing an article should be no matter what the topic.

that's not exactly what i meant... the point i was trying to make just stems from the frustration i feel because i cant get through to the ones i love that do this to themselves... i am truly sorry if it came out any other way... i used your article because i thought it was so good as a debate point with one of these people in favour of the anti-drug battle that i deal with on a constant basis... i was not having a dig at anyone and i was not incinuating that i was perfect... please try to see it from where i stand... i love these people and they are killing themselves in a way that gives me a front row seat... i too needed this advice because if i dont have all the facts i have no basis to try and convince anyone that it is such a bad thing to be doing to their bodies and to the people who love them...so sorry once again and please try to forgive me...

Matey, I understand exactly what you are getting at, and you are right. If we can get someone to see past the BS before all that paranoia sets in, they may be savable, but once they are so fixated with it all that they won't listen, all we can do is try to educate everyone around that person so that they don't coax others to believe in their paranoid self-righteous pro-drug propaganda BS.

I didn't write this to try and get anyone to quit, as I know I'd be just beating a dead horse. If you can succeed in getting someone to quit anything addictive you're a champion! My aim was to admonish the druggy's excuses before someone starts believing the nonsense and another person falls victim to the propaganda and ends up addicted. Prevention is easier than cure, that's for sure.
