How to plan for a boy or a girl

lillyanka by lillyanka Talking Back(June 2006) (rank 94th)

I am wondering if anyone knows of any tips on how to encourage the BOY swimmers to the egg!! I know there is no guarantee of course but I would like to do everything I can to have a boy! Any books, advice welcome. Please e-mail to bxstar6@hotmail.com

Well, actually, this might sound a little like an old wives' tale (or more like an old MAYAN wives' tale), but I don't know if you've heard about the Mayan Board (or Tabla Maya. It doesn't sound as good in english).

The Mayans were really ahead of their time, especially regarding astronomy and math, and the mayan women used a method to know exactly when they were giving birth: they would make little knots on a string to count the days of their pregnancy. They also had a method for calculating the baby's gender according to the mother 's age at the time of conception and the month the baby was conceived. It's said to be pretty accurate, but it's pretty much only known in spanish-speaking countries, and used only for, you know, fun. It's something expectant mommies use to speculate on the sex of the baby they're expecting until they can get an ultrasound and see for themselves.

I found ONE website that has it, but it's in spanish. So if you understand spanish or there's someone who can help you, go to http://es.geocities.com/tablamaya/calculo.html. If not, I'll try to get a copy so I can translate it for you. I've actually seen it work lots of times, although who knows? It might just be a huge coincidence.

If you can't use that site because it's in spanish, the chinese lunar calendar is very similar to the mayan one, as they both use the fases of the moon in their calculations.

http://www.thelaboroflove.com/chart/cal.html

It's pretty much the same, you just need the age you'll be when you get pregnant, and then you can see which are the months in which you can conceive a boy.

I hope this helped, or at least that you have some fun with it!

Re: How to plan for a boy or a girl

Statistics suggest that the timing of intercourse during your cycle may have some correlation with the gender of the baby.

Boys: Male sperm swim faster but die sooner. If you are trying for a boy, having sexual intercourse the day of ovulation may increase your chances.

Girls: Female sperm swim slower but live longer. If you are trying for a girl, having sexual intercourse 2-3 days before ovulation and abstaining afterwards may increase your chances.

Re: How to plan for a boy or a girl

Well I dont know about the Mayan, but official figures in China where boy's are highly reguarded are 117 boy's to 100 girls. A high percentage of those baby girls are unwanted and end up being adopted or put into institutions. No- one knows how many girls  discretely vanish from isolated rural areas.  So In my oppinion, if is not working for the cultural body that invented it, it just aint gonna work. But does make fun  and interesting reading. Baby is Baby  in my book, all little miracles each and every one.

Cheers Winnie.x

I think this advice is meant to be taken with a grain of salt, and the theories are really interesting to read...  Thanks for posting it!

my experience

I read lots and lots of theories on this when we were planning number two.  The most common advice I found was conceiving in the later part of your cycle the better chance of conceiving a girl.  Luke was conceived in the earlier part of my cycle.  I am lucky enough to have a pretty much spot on 28 day cycle.  Anyway, I watched my cycle for 5 months then day 20 of my cycle in October 2003, Alyssa was conceived.  Flukey; probably, worth the try; definitely.  Most importantly, lots of fun.  Odds are good though, 50/50 :)

With all this, it didn't really matter to us, we just liked the idea of having the cliched pigeon pair.

baby gender

I found a book "How to choose the sex of your baby" by Dr. L.B. Shettles and David Rorvik to be interesting

predicting baby gender.

Although i had fun reading your information, i dont think anyone can truely say what you will have. Its really a special event and with that in mind we should all be greatful for a living breathing child. My sister has a child with cystic fibrosis and other mothers i know waited 7 years for a child, they are very special.

Didn't work for me
This is not a reliable predictor of gender. It has no scientific foundation, nor is it explained well.

I think you could position it better as a fun activity for pregnant couples, just to pass the time.

Re: How to plan for a baby boy or girl

See, that chinese website to predict what baby you are going to have is wrong. I had my baby in Feburary and on that month with my age it says im suspose to have a boy. Well.. I had a girl!! And why should it matter if you have a boy or not. I dont think you should be able to pick the gender of your baby. Just be happy with what god gives you. I was and I love being a mom. I didnt care what I had inside of me as long as it was healthy.
