Electric window WARNING

Anonymous Author (February 2007)

Okay it happened to me, I smoke ciggies and had pulled of the road to have a ciggy break as I don't smoke in the car. When ever I stop, My eldest daughter always gets out (6) , and I undo the buckles on jj's (2) Buckles as she sometimes get out and other times just has a little wander around the car, thing like sitting on my seat, front seat and playing with the radio... (I have never minded) The accessories are left on for the radio and the windows.

Jj was standing on the door, something she has never done! and when I seen this I said "no" but it was too late, she had stood on the window button and the window had gone up, she was stuck, her head hanging out the car and her body inside,, she didn't make a noise, I figure she could not breath, It only took me a max of 10 seconds to get to the other side of the car and undo the door to get the window down.

I got to thinking, What if the other window had not been down? (she also locked the car with her foot, the buttons are very close together) How would have I opened the door in time? Imagine If I had not seen this, (I never leave my kids in the car other than if I am right next to it) But i suppose it could happen.

I have now a new rule in place, the windows are on lock at all times, and Jj can hop out the car or stay in her safety belt at all my ciggy stops or if she does get out I turn all accessories off. I am not ever having another thing like this happening to me. I did think though, I would post this warning, as it can happen. I would never leave her in the car unattended, but even attended things can happen.

Re: Electric window WARNING
I thought my 4 were monkeys!  We don't have car window problems but we have a lot of problems with the windows in our home, mainly them opening the window and throwing toys out or them trying to get out.
What can you do?  You think of all things possible and then they find the impossible.  Just as you are fixing this problem, they find a new one for you.
I would never have thought of dangers in the car, especially when the car was stopped, parked and switch off.
I bet you can see the funny side of it and it would have made a great photo!  just think that it could have been worse- your little one could have figured out how to start the car!

Re: Electric window WARNING

Thanks for the warning, I had a friend in St Johns Ambulance and she told me that electric windows are awful for other reasons too....

In an accident and you are trapped in a car you cannot get the windows down if the engine has stopped (I know my windows don't work unless the engine is running).  Makes me wonder why they have them at all!!!

I am so glad you little one is ok.  I can only imagine what you must have felt.

Thank goodness
Wow, what a close call. I am so glad she is ok. Maybe if you need to take a break pulling over where there is a childrens playground would be the better idea so that they are safely playing while you are watching and smoking from a distance. Playing in a car is very dangerous and there is more dangers then just electric windows but I am so glad you shared your experience of what happened to you. Great advice.

My car rules... well, it would if I still had one!!!

I've always followed a few simple rules with regards to cars, kids, ciggies, and rest breaks, electronic controls or not...

1. I take regular breaks when driving long distances. "Stop, Revive, Survive" This avoids fatigue, cramps, and bad moods from all. Also gives you a chance to have those ciggie breaks outside of the car where your kids are choking on the smoking and you're not stinking your car out. A 5 to 10 minute leg stretch every two hours is the general recommendation.

2. It's now illegal to smoke in a car while children are in the car anyway, and I personally find that smoking a ciggie can in fact be a distraction whilst driving. So, I don't do it. I've witnessed three car accidents and one motorcycle accident caused by cigarettes, and I don't want one to happen to me.

3. When I'm not in the car, neither are the kids... or the keys! Radio, lights, airconditioner be damned. It only takes but seconds for kids to lock themselves in a car, or for someone to push you out the way and jump in your car and drive away, with or without your kids. I've seen a car-jacking happen and they happen so fast it's astounding.

I'll take the risk...
I agree - cars are not play things, nor are they places to leave children - there are too many tempting, potentially dangerous scenarios that can eventuate.

Now, I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, because I love a good glass of wine & a ciggy at least once a week.  However, not in front of any children ever, usually when I am out, or kids are all in bed for the night.

How far can you travel before you have to have a ciggy break?  Also, the nicotine and other chemicals still cling to your clothes and hair, so while you are doing a great thing by getting out of the car - is it really necessary?

Just to clarify that - I mean, is it really necessary to have the cigarette break at all?  It would seem to be a lot safer, and healthier for all involved to skip it.

Even if it is not for a ciggy it is still beneficial to stop and have a break on long journey or when one of the cars occupants needs a pit stop.

Absolutely, I agree - having had over 5years experience in the driver training and rider training industry, I am well aware of how dangerous fatigue can be.

I just felt that everybody had avoided the obvious question in their efforts to be polite.  The question is, why would you leave your kids alone in the car, especially to stop and have a cigarette?

They do not mix, you have to always be on your highest alert. I have a 4yo who would cause all sorts of havoc if I let him run wild.

I did it
I had picked my son up from pre-school and it was a really hot day so I had the air con on, he put his window down, I asked him to put it up and he wouldn't so I did it, next minute he screamed I turned around to see his little arm caught in the window, no damage just a red mark and a very sore little man, I felt terrible so now the windows are locked.  So just another warning don't do what I did x

OMG moment.
My heart's in my mouth reading this story. It just goes to show that anything and everything is a danger to littlies. I'd have nightmares for ever after if I went through what you did. Glad it all worked out okay. All the best, and thanks for sharing your story. I would never have dreamed of anything like that ever happening, I'll never see my electric windows in the same way again. (just a note: I never ever let my child use the car as a play thing because knobs, buttons, dials, etc are ultra appealing to them, not to mention handbrakes, gear sticks, seatbelts, cigarette lighter, etc. A car is a minefield. When Lachlan gets in the car, he gets seatbelted in and thats where he stays until the destination, then I get out and he gets out - definitely no dilly dallying. If he knows one thing about a car, it's that it's not a toy.)

Kids and cars

I had just been to the shop and I knew we were going out very soon after I got home ,so I left the car unlocked and keys in ignition and hand brake off .I asked my older children to go and put my 2 year old in his car seat and told them to get in car as we were ready to go.My 4 year old son got in the car and knocked it out of park and the car started rolling back ,my 2 year old was standing near the open back door so when the car started rolling back it knocked him over my husband and I both ran after the car and somehow i mangaged to climb in the back seat to pull the hand brake on just as the front wheel was about to run right over his hips luckily he was fine but we called an ambulance and had him checked out just to be sure but because it was an incident involving a car the police were notified and when they arrived at the hospital to speak with us my four year old son said "Mummy I dont want to go to jail"  poor little bugger was horrified.

So from that day I make sure I pull the  handbrake on and lock the car.

Electric windows
What a fright for you
I was in a bad enough state when my youngest shut the car door on his hand a few months ago, I had to open the door to release his hand and he had a broken thumb
Electric windows seem lovely when you have them but I always worry about the safety of them with children

OMG
That's so scary. I always make sure that the front windows are down and locked when i get out of the car for a smoke break, and I always have even before i had the baby. I'm petrified of it locking up on me. Thanks so much for the reminder and I'm so glad your babe isn't hurt!

Close Call
We live in a small rural town and I often leave my car unlocked in the driveway.  I am changing my habit as the other day my son and his mate next door opened the car door and got in the car.  They were locking and unlocking the door when my husband walked past (wondering why it is so quiet!).  Very dangerous!  I always take my keys with me in case he locks himself in and it would not surprise me if one day he tried to start the car~!

wow
omg... i don't have a working car but when it was working i never left the kids in there because of fear of somthing like that happening and i have a tendancy to freeze up and not be able to act in those situations... just goes to show that we as parents should alwase trust our instincts. you could just as easily been looking the other way when all that happened and who knows what could have gone wrong then. good thing you trusted those instincts to look when you did... glad it all turned out ok though...

locked my babe in
i dont smoke but leaving the shops one day with bubs and her nana i put bub in her car seat and continued putting shopping in the boot, i thought nana had the keys, nana had put th keys in the centre console and my car self lock after a minute or something if u havnt started the ignition. so she was locked in all windows up and was about 35degrees outside. i ran to the bank which i was in front of to c if the had acoat hanger that might b able to unlock doors with everyone jus lokked at me like i was in playin the pokies with bub outside! so i ran back out and smashed the window. very scary. i am much more careful now!
