Teach your preschoolers - Task 1.

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 12th)

I came up with an idea yesterday that I just wanted to share with you all because my kids absolutely loved it. It involved my 5yr old who has just started school, and my two 3yr olds.

Whilst sitting down showing my 5yr old how to do his homework

(this week is the letter M so we had to find pictures of things starting with M and also teach him how to write his name) my 3yr olds took a keen interest of what we were doing. They understood the basic concept so I thought, why not let them join in as well? So I got them a peice of paper each and we all sat together finding things in the junk mail that started with M and stuck them on a page. Next we sat down and wrote our names together. This was a huge hit, because they each felt special when their name was on paper, and it was something they can show people next time they come over. "Look, I can write my name!"

I am hoping that by christmas time they will all be good enough at writing their names that they can sign their own names on the xmas cards we sent out.

-Just a quicky, I'll try and add a new task each week, so check back regularly for more!

I have found this with children I look after if they have older brothers or sisters as they actually want to do homework too! Also the younger ones want to join in and understand the older childrens games like I spy or what's the time Mr Wolf etc. therefore they tend to learn faster. Great if they want to learn!

Be careful
I have been teaching E at home - just as her curiosity leads us.  However it has resulted in her being able to do many things that others her age cannot do yet, or are just learning.  We started out doing it to improve her periods of concentration to a specific task chosen by me.

I don't want her to be bored when she starts school, because that means she will be clever, bored and so disruptive (BIG GENERALISATION i realise).  Recently I started helping out in a reception class at the school she will attend in September.  I am having to re-evaluate what we do and broaden the things we do so that the concentration is maintained, but she does not get too far ahead.

At present it is not necessary for me to home-school, and I believe that she will benefit from this particular school system that she will go to.  If I was home-schooling I would continue to just develop things as we are until we started the curriculum.  Getting ahead of her age would not matter as much.

So if you are encouraging pre-school/toddlers at home and showing them how to type, write their names, add, subtract and other basics, then please please bear in mind how they will fit in when they get to school
Peace
EF.x

teaching our preschoolers

That's a great idea what youre doing. It does make them feel important. I'm also teaching my daughter to write her name and she is 4 this month. It's just great to see them try so hard.

Learning made fun
The first one always paves the way for the rest, huh?  LOL.  The little ones always want to do what the bigger ones are doing so this is a great idea to promote learning.

cool
ideas like this i can use :) hehehe thanx my son is homeschooled in kindy and he is learning letters too hehehe this is a great idea... i alwase do my son's reading schoolwork with my 4 month old on my lap and although she cannot possibly write yet i could give her a crayon to scribble with while my son is doing his writing... (she has the inate ability to know when he is concentrating on somthing because that's her cue to blabber and yell for no real reason) so that just might make her feel like she's included and keep her quiet too.. groovi hehehe thanx :))

great Idea Mony
The boys would have had so much fun and you managed to spend time with 3 of them instead of 1.....Homework can be a hard thing when it comes to the little ones because they kind of feel left out....You didn't do that and its great....
