It's ok not to be a supermom

kiarasmom2005 by kiarasmom2005 Speaking(February 2007) (rank 500+)

I would consider alot of this to be more of an opinion than advice............

I have noticed alot with my generation ( I am 25), that there are alot of young girls have this HUGE need to be the perfect mom or super mom. I have a few moms

around me teaching their kids all kinds of stuff (like sign language, and reading and the list goes on), seem to manage a full time job, all the responsibilities of the household, a social life, a love life, have the perfect appearance, can fit a full excersise program in there, and seem to be the happiest people on the planet. NOW, I think that all of this is great and I give them a huge hats off!!!

Now for me, this at one point REALLY intimidated me as a mother. After searching and talking I learned a few things.

I learned that for some mothers that may work well to be that busy and for some it may not. I learned that kids have just normal everyday stuff that they need to learn and it's ok that my daughter probably won't play mozart on the piano at 2. I learned that it is ok to get up in the morning and live in my pajamas for the day with my hair looking like I stuck my finger in the light socket.

Although we have our good days and bad days, At the end of the day my family is pretty happy. Don't feel pressured to be the perfect mom because you will make mistakes. Multitasking is a learned process....if you want to do all of those things it will come if it's meant to. Just enjoy your days with your kids, and let them know that you love them.

We are all really supermums.  By loving our kids and doing the best we can each day - makes us super.

Great piece!

Cheers

Thanks!  I have often felt as though I fell short of the mark of a good mother.  We lived next door to this lady who had 2 boys and she was exactly what you described, and she never raised her voice to them either!  As I was not a terribly patient (marginally better now!) and always carrying on at our girls, I felt as though she was judging me.  You have now given me the permission to go ahead and be who I am, not that I really needed it.  ]

You have said it perfectly, and my girls are happy at the end of the day and I know that I am doing a good job now.  Thank you for this article!

Re: It's ok not to be a supermom

What I want to know is who coins these terms such as "supermum". Basically every mother (with an exception of a few) is a "supermum" in their own right.

How true that what may work for one mum may not work for another! Different people have different priorities and needs. When I was home full-time I was one of those who could quite happily stay in my pj's all day!!

We need to remember as young (well I consider myself young, my 6 year old brother has other ideas) women and mothers not to compare yourself to someone else, not to be intimidated by others and their concept of how life should be. Support each other and we will all be much happier!

Now I work fulltime (so I have to actually get dressed!!), during the week am virtually a single parent as my partner has been working away a lot, and although my house isn't dirty some days it is an absolute shambles! However like you at the end of the day my family is pretty happy!

Supermums

Hey you're description is a mirror  image of me.....PJ's all day...had my finger in the power socket hair days.....rofl

Being a mum is certainly a tough job...but I wouldn't quit for anything.

Supermums...yummymummy's...way too much hard work me....I have enough on my plate already.

One day at a time....everything eventually gets done and or seen too.

** Now ...where is my husband....there's still time to make more babies and have fun **

absolutely

I am 33 and this stuff rings true for me too. Realising that its OK that you haven't cleaned your teeth yet, or washed the pots and managed to look like you just stepped out of the hairdressers is a huge milestone and one that takes a while to get used to and something that you have to remind youself on a daily basis. In trying to be all things to all people you often leave out yourself, plus its exhausting to maintain.

Spending some time out for yourself is important too, whether its a bath or reading or music or a cofee....I can't say I manage to do this everyday - but I try.

I spent a long time feeling that everyone expects me to be this person - how can I do it and feeling guilty that I could not. In fact the person who expected 'I should be able to' was me.

mums can be so hard on themselves.

Balance

Do you know, I think in today's world, it's very hard to find a balance. I run a business from home and I know that if I pay a lot of attention to it my family life suffers and if I pay a lot of attention to my family, the business suffers.  If I try to be all things to all people I get run down and catch a cold or something. Does anyone else have this issue? I do admire those people who are like the Eveready Bunny .......

I agree

Honestly what is the perfect mum anyway. People that overdo it like that are usually over compensating for what they didn't have or miss out on. Or they just have a low self esteem and are overdoing it to make them look and feel good.

mums that are buisy like that are that way cause they enjoy it, each and everyone to there own, i am a very buisy, active, mum who loves to have a clean house, cook everything, go to the gym and so on, but i do it cause it makes me happy and feels really good,i love it when my husband brags about me and hugs me and tell me how wonderful i am ect hehe (bless him) i think you would be realy surprised, one of the biggest reasons they are that way (so buisy doing what you call" trying to be a super mum") is because they are happy and healthy with alot of energy,  and the rest of the family are happy because they are, not cause they have low self esteem lol

p.s not haveing a go at youeveryone to there own, people do what they enjoy, everyone is different with differnent likes and dislikes

dunno... i've just always been like that, and i've been told several times that i am a tad old school lol, i just really enjoy the hecticness of it all, plus i've learned the inportance of  keeping healthy and fit, (but i was always very heath contious even before i had kids, but i realized more so after i had kids and while haveing them the inportance of eating right and excerise, and mental health which is stemmed from your diet ect) and by continuing to take the little extra time to eat well and excersise makes all the difrference to how you feel and cope with the demands of being a mum,  alot of the reason why mums get so burnt out is that not only do they get less sleep and have to deal with toddlers ect, there also not eating the right foods so not getting the adequate nutrition they need to keep up with the demands of being a mum, ( i can't believe how many people have apsolutely no understanding of what to eat and not to eat, or what a basic diet should consist of) and another thing that some mums don't realize is that by exceriseing and keeping fit they will actually have more energy, obviously if you are very unfit it would take a while to get fit , so you would find it hard to get motivated and all that, but by simply looking after your body you can ocomplish amazeing things, plus you will be more mentally sound as well, as so many mums end up on anti depressents and all that because they are tired and burned out which turns into depression, all in all, its a matter of learning how to look after yourself so you can look after others and enjoy your life, and instead of dreading the things you have to do you look forward to them as a new challenge, then feeling the satisfaction of acomplishment, wow i hope that didn't sound to preachy hehe lol, so anyway you've really gotta educate your self about your body and how it works, these are things everyone should learn

NO no you are right. I wasn't much of an excersiser pre-baby (unless you count dancing at the bar which I don't do anymore LOL)...........I have taken a recent course called touch for health and trying to learn more about taking better care of myself. I want my daughter to learn it too (I came from parents who didn't take care of themselves). So time to break the cycle.

thats an easy answer... the perfect mum is the best mum you can be for your kids... thats it  and guess what... it dosn't matter how you define it, wether it be having a three course meal and a spotless house ready for your hubby and having happy kids everywhere because mum is a ball o beans and ready to play whenever... or if it's bakedbeans on toast, toys everywhere, an overpaid babysitter and a tired mum because she has worked hard all day to provide education, necisities and a good work ethic for her kids because she is a single parent. they are equally good at their job of being the best mum they can be.

I fall into the trap of subconsciously wanting to be supermum. I was always haunted with the saying " a woman's work is never done " by my father when I was growing up. I find, as a result, I can't relax, especially if the house is not spotless. Then in turn, I get angry, irritable and miserable when the house is spotless, and then cyclone Lachlan and Hurricane Husband passes through. I feel then I have to start all over again - it's never ending. No wonder I'm always tired and grumpy. And in honesty, I don't know why I bother being so meticulous, it's not like I get visitors over very often... but then, the one time the house is a bomb... who drops by....? The MOTHER IN LAW! LOL.

Nice Advice
I totally agree with this advice, and I could never keep up with the women who do that.  I can hardly keep up with my house work.  As long as my son is happy that is all that matters to me.  He has everything he needs.

I'm totally with you on this one. I had my first when i was only 19, so i felt i had a lot of people to prove wrong. In the end i was driving myself and my husband nuts. i had to have everything just right. Then i came to breaking point and realised that i don't have to look great everyday. And my home doesn't need to be in showroom condition.Since then our family has been so much happier. I spend more time with my family rather than cleaning the house top to bottom. Great advice.

One way to be the perfect Mum is to love your kids, enjoy your kids, be there for your kids and have fun with your kids. Anything else can usually wait

Very true nell!! I think that some other new moms maybe needed to hear this cuz I tell ya, somehow this has been a huge pressure for young people. I think that to some extent, this supermom persona takes away from the important things
