Going with your gut

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 165th)
Our newborn is only 2 1/2 weeks old and already it has been quite the roller coaster.  His brother was kind enough to give him his cold and then things seemed to get out of control.  A stuffy nose and then a cough.  I wasn't sure if I was
reacting like an overprotective mom or if I was doing the right thing by calling the doctor about everything.
  • Every child is different.  I was feeling bad that I wasn't sure about what to do when my son got a cough.  I mean, I have a 2 year old.  I should know these things, right?  I was panicked because he was such a little baby and he sounded horrible.  I took him to the pediatrician and found out that his lungs were clear.  When I expressed my fears about being unsure, my pediatrician reminded me that every child is different and that it is always better to be safe rather than sorry.
  • Don't be afraid to ask the professionals to get reassurance.  What if my son had a virus or was on his way to getting pneumonia?  You never know the answer to a question unless you ask it.
  • Go with your gut.  If you think your child is sick and needs medical attention, have him checked out.  Even if someone gives you a hard time for asking lots of questions or bringing your child to the doctor frequently, you know what is best for your child or when your child isn't acting like his normal self.
Trust your instincts.  You are the parent and you know your child.  Never apologize for being cautious about your child's health.

Absolutely spot on
Every child is different and every situation is also different, just because we have experience with one thing doesnt mean it will pan out the same each time.  That is what makes life so exciting - and sometimes slightly worrisome.  Great advice here.
Peace

Too true
How scary for you!  My little one had bronchiolitus at 8 weeks and that was bad enough!  I learnt the hard way to never be afraid to get help.  I knew my son was not well but there were no symptoms aside from a temp that I could not control.  I rang teh GP who convinced me to come in and we ended up in hospital with pneumonia - very scary!

gut instinct
They don't call it women's intuition for nothing. Lachlan can seem not his normal self in his behaviour and maybe not eat as much in the day and I'll say to hubby, "you know, I think he's not well or coming down with something" and sometimes hubby can't understand why i'd say it, and sure enough within a few hours Lachlan can have a raging temperature. Gut instinct is EVERYTHING.

Exactly
I dont know how many times I have taken my kids to the doctor for something and it has been fine...Probably too many to even remember but there has been times when they have been taken to the doctor for less and things have not been exactly fine...Going with your gut is the best tool we have as parents.....Ps....By the way he is such a cutie hehehe
Cheers
Angie
