Fire...Some safety tips around your home...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 9th)
After the article I put up the other night about the dangers of plug ins and fire risks my husband decided to write a bit of advice on a few things that are of risk to you and yours...As most of you know and if you didn't you do now my
husband is a fire fighter and is pretty particular about a few things....In your home there are a few things you need to keep on top of to help reduce the risk of fire ...

Your fans...How often do you clean your fans? As a pedestal fan blows air out the front it sucks air through the back and with this air comes dust...Sometimes there becomes quite a build-up and these then become a fire hazard...Clean your fans...Just a quick dust over or a wipe with a clean cloth can help lessen alot of heartache...

Do you have mobile phones? Or does an appliance you own have a large square pack that plugs into the wall? When you charge your mobile what do you do with the charger? These have been known to start fires...With teens in this house and them all having their own mobiles this is something we keep on top of all the time...Alot of these charges actually get hot when you feel them...We actually had a home phone  that had a pack like this that got rather hot...When you phone is charged turn it off and take it from the plug...Same goes for any other charger type things you have...Do not leave them in...They are a fire risk...

You are painting or polishing your furniture or around your house and you have done clean up with some old rags...Rather than just leaving them there until you wash the next day or just scrunching them up to be fixed for a later date hang them dirty or not on the line till you can wash them or throw them out...Wet rags with chemicals on them or even just wet can cause fires they heat up and they can smoulder and cause a fire(spontanious combustion) ...All you need is the right conditions and you have another fire hazard...Hanging them out until they are dry is just as easy as throwing them out wet...

Do you own a air conditioner or air cooler maybe even a dryer? All three of these appliances have filters that need to be cleaned on a regular basis...Things like lint in dryers and dust on air coolers or air conditioners are also fire harards too...Keep them clean and and you have instantly reduced another fire hazard in your home...

Leaving an electric blanket on is another way of causing fires and it has been known to happen...it happened to one of my friends...Along with christmas lights and all those other things we leave switched on when they are not really needed...It is dangerous....and a fire hazard...

Nothing that you do can or will guarantee that you will not have a housefire...We just all need to take precautions when it comes to trying to avoid it...As I have said before in one of my other Fire advice articles I had a friend whos daughter left her electric blanket on which in turn burnt the house down and until this day herself and her daughter still wish they had of checked...

Do you have anymore that can be added to this list?

Prevention is better than a cure with everything so stay safe and take care all....

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie
