Dive into the archives - it's quite an adventure!

Anonymous Author (March 2007)

Last night I decided to go on an advice reading and voting spree.  However, I didn't feel like reading through advice written by people I knew well, people I'd read heaps of their advice before, or pages and pages of long articles.  I wanted short random bits of advice,

written by many different people I'd never heard of before - it was just a mood I was in.  I found an excellent way to do it, and in doing it, I found a number of excellent reasons to do it.

What I did was, I went to the members list, listed it by number of advice articles written, went to the last page of members that had written one piece of advice each, and starting from the end, I clicked on the name of a member and started reading and voting on the advice they wrote, and did this for one and a half pages of member names - about 75 of them.

Tonight I did another reading advice and voting spree, but I approached it from a different angle. I went to the member's list, clicked on Date Joined.  It listed all the minti members starting at the most recent recruits, so I clicked on it again, and it listed the members from the ones that joined first.  Again, I clicked on the member names and started reading and voting on their advice.

Much to my delight I discovered that a lot of the advice was quite short and easy to read, and as I did this by opening many windows, I was able to read, vote, close window, start reading the next one within a couple of minutes each.

I was surprised that some that were quite old weren't advice at all but a question - was there a Q&A section back then?  If so, I assume that reporting questions that were posted as advice was not as fashionable back then?  I was just intending to read and vote, I really was not in the mood for commenting (though I did leave a couple of comments), so I breezed through it really fast - and in doing so came up with some more ideas about some things I'd like to write about as well.

I learned a few things along the way, I found it very enjoyable as I did find some articles that really had an impact on me.  Doing this also brought a heap of old articles that had probably been long forgotten to the recent activity list for other curious soles to see, so I feel that I've had a very productive couple of nights.  If I can do this every night, in about a year's time I'll be able to say I have read and voted on all the advice posted on Minti!  Haha!  Not likely.

I've noticed that a lot of members that like spending their time reading advice articles just tend to read the latest advice or they just read advice that comes up in a search they are doing for a particular subject. If you are in the mood for just reading a heap of articles, I recommend taking a dive back into the archives and read some of the advice of long ago, as it can be rather interesting to see how much things have changed, as well as informative and entertaining.  There are some real gems to be found back there.

I would link a few that I feel are definately worth reading, but I'm inclined to say, go on the adventure of exploration and find them yourself.  It's really quite amazing what you can find on Minti.

Good advice   I'm a newbie here and I'm kinda lost on what to read first, so I've been flicking through stuff past and present and reading what interests me.  I kinda guess this is what minti is a little about.

Awww man! You sprung me!
Awww man!  You sprung me!  I have done this for a while, and it is refreshing to see the way the site has developed from what it was 'back in the day' (a year ago when it first started up, and how things are now.  Most articles are way way longer now for a start!!!!!
It is such a fun way to read and enjoy Minti in a new and fresh way each time you visit.

Also on those days when you want a break from advice - do similar for the blogs.  So many people have such fascinating lives displayed on their home pages.... well worth checking out.  Esp those who join Minti because a piece of advice worked for them when they were searching the net in panic, so joined up.

Yay for Minti!
Peace

Awww man! You sprung me!

Hehe! Glad I'm not the only one around here that does this sort of thing. I plan to do a homepages of members exploration one day.

One other thing I found fascinating was looking at the advice of members that had written several articles over several months, and how each one was progressively better quality than the previous in many cases.  It was also cool to see the developments that shaped the advice. The first one might relate to a feeding problem they resolved with their 6 week old baby, then a few months later it's got to do with rolling over and starting to crawl, a bit later  it's solid foods, then sleeping routines, so you can sort of 'watch' their little one grow.

Great idea
Even the one liners are inspiring to me. An article doesn't have to be several paragrahs to have relevance. We are all different and that is what makes minti great. If you have advice please share. It doesn't have to be perefectly writeen - just advcie that has worked for you is what I want to read. I like the articles from way back (hahah) when i joined. It was few and far between and look at minti now. minti is like a smorgasboard of differing opions and experiences. whether I agree with it all or not doesn't matter. It can only help me to understood my own self better and the way I parent.

Indeed, the Minti "library" is full of great parent driven advice. That's what makes Minti so unique and special. Great reminder.
