A few Idea's on how to get the jobs done when you have a little wannabe helper...

Jessgore by Jessgore Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 11th)

Today we were having people over by five… What to do, oh what to do? Need to clean, but Francis won’t leave me alone, and keeps following me around the house….  Keeping in mind my son is 21 months old...

I had to clean the toilet; the spray I was using is safe for kiddies and walls… So what I did was spray the wall next to the toilet and let him wipe that…  Then when it came to washing the toilet bowl he took away the brush… So I let him scrub the toilet bowl... He did a pretty good job to. I was amazed at how well he had watched me…

For spots on the wall, I had a MR Clean white sponge thing. I just gave him a cloth and he followed me just wiping where ever he could reach.. He was having so much fun and I was getting the job done.

The floor was a little harder. As I needed to do the stairs as well I gave the Roomba a day off… So I pulled out the vacuum. But Francis wanted the vacuum..   So I gave him the vacuum and I got out a broom for me, and swept every thing into a pile and showed him that things disappear when you put the vacuum on them.. Thankfully I did not have lots of stuff on the floor or he may have put lots up there..   So I swept a pile and he vacuumed it.  Not the fastest but trust me it was the easiest way to get it down with out screaming or him taking the vacuum from me…

Clothes washing…   I gave him a step ladder and handed him the clothes and he put them in.. When it was time to dry, he stood beside me and as I took the clothes out of the machine he put them in the dryer.. Doing it this way also helps me find the socks as for some reason they seem to shrink in the dryer..

The hardest thing I had to do was the dishwasher… Being that there are things breakable I had to be very careful with this… So what I did was ask him to open the top tray and then placed two cups in, then asked him to close it and open the bottom tray and placed two plates in and again open the top placed some cups, etc. And I did this until the dishwasher was stacked…

Ok it took longer then had I have done it on my own with no one in the house, but there was a little someone and he wanted to help.. So in fact having him help me took less time then it would have had he of just followed me around taking things from my hands or screaming because I would not play with him…

So if you have a little helper wannabe, there are a few tips on how to get the job done… Also if you don’t want help with the dishes, spray some water on the fridge and let them wipe it up.. Get them a little spray bottle of water and let them go crazy.. Ok watch them,  you don’t know what they will spray but in my kitchen he can spray anywhere he wants, so that is not an issue for me…  I must say for 21 month old boy, he did a very good job, and I was very impressed that he stayed with me cleaning the whole time...

Anyway good luck and happy cleaning…

Love the water in the spray bottle idea. Will give that one ago for sure. I also find cleaning the shower is easiest done just befor I get in. That way daddies got him and I can get it done with out worrying about him getting to the cleaners. Thats not really letting him help I know but an extra tip. lol

I bet it wears off

I was just thinking what great training for a boy & then reality struck, it will wear off by the time he's a teenager and you have to tell him to tidy up his pig sty he calls a bedroom. LOL

Well done Jess, very innovative and safe.

Great!
I have Master Independent wanting to help out too. Sometimes I let him, sometimes I dont. What I need to learn though is PATIENCE cos I'm the type that just wants to get stuck into the cleaning and get it done, but of course with a miniature helper, it's to be expected that the chore will take 5x as long and then I'll end up having to do it properly later.. Aaaaahhh, I just have to learn to relax. Relax??? What's that?

LOL I look at it like this.. If I have to redo some of the jobs, at least there won't be as much to redo.. LOL  Just have to wipe over stuff.. LOL  Today I was unstacking the dishwasher and he was taking out the glasses for me. I did not want him to do this, but it was either that or he chuck a tantrum and one might fall on the floor and break.. He decided he did not want to hand them to me any more but wanted to actually put them in the cupboard which is way to high for even me sometimes.. So I had to lift him up so he could put them in.. So in getting my arm stretches done he also ever so gently put the glasses in the cupboard. I had to move them around a little once we were done. But at least he was happy....   :)

Fabulous fun!
Sounds like you had an imaginative day.  I hope that it pays off and stokes his interest in chores for the future also
Peace

Great advice !

Good ideas Jess!  I also get Michael to help me when I'm cleaning, that way it stops him yelling "mummy play"! at me all the time, because my response to that is "Michael clean"!!! He's very good at cleaning the mirror. (we have 3 wall length mirrors in our kitchen, that came with the house when we bought it) & Michael is constantly putting his dirty hands all over it, by making faces at himself!! So it's his job to clean off his mess !!!

I find it quite hard when trying to mop the floors though, as wants to do it for me. So now when I'm mopping, I give him a spray bottle with water & a rag & he has the job of cleaning his chalk 'art work' off our brick work before 'grumpy daddy' comes home !!! This way everyone's happy!!! xoxo

Great advice !
Thanks... Yep the floor is not an easy task... Buy a plastic little mop or a broom his size. I have to invest in one myself.. But mostly for mopping the floor I wait until he goes to bed then the only problem I have is the dog.. MY GOD does he love to chase the mop and leave his little prints in the floor before it dries.. AHHHHH  :)

Great advice!

It's great to let your little one help.  I think it teachs them to be tidy, as well as being fun for them.

My little guy helps unload the dishwasher, puts his dirty cloths in the laundry basket, puts his garbage in the bin...... I think it's really good to teach them at a young age to be responsible for thier own mess.

Love you advice

I love it when I read your advice Jess. This is going to help me out sooo much when Cadence gets to this age and wants to help out with everything that I do!

That was very sweet that your son was doing.
Oh.. And don't you love those Magic Eraeser's? I used them before and they are MAGIC, work on everything!

Thank you.  Yep the magic erasers are fantastic. :)  Love them for every thing even the grout between the tiles.

He was very sweet for helping me. I would like to think this is the beginning of a cleaning helper.  I hope he keeps it up into his teens.. LOL

I had one today

My daughter was like that today, daddy was playing with Jai, so she followed me around everywhere, I was folding the clothes and she wanted to help, it took longer then I wanted it to I had to refold most of what she did!!! lol I went out to the line to hang some more clothes out and when I came back in her pile and Jai's pile were no longer there of course I thought the worst and asked where the clothes had gone. In here mummy she called from her bedroom, she had put her brothers clothes away and was doing the same with hers, I just melted my little 3 yr old is my big helper, next I need to teach her how to iron lol

LOL That is so cool. I am still trying to master the folding of the washing. That is a tricky one as he likes to undo the piles as opposed to putting them away.  So for the moment I just set up the DVD and fold them on the bed while he watches a movie.  :)
I hope he keeps this up though I could get very used to having a little helper around the house.

Mummy little helper
LOL Mum said my sister and I were horrible with doing cleaning things.  When I told her about Francis helping me out she said keep it up as it will help me down the track. I hope she is right.  My dad said "What you teaching him woman's work."  Then I hear OUCH. I think mum slapped him..  LOL
