If you Drink Drive you are a Bloody Idiot...What About Drug Drive then...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 9th)
have written alot of articles on Illegal drugs and teens...I have also written an article about what to look for and what might be the signs your teen is using drugs...I was just sitting here after last weekend thinking about something that happened on that weekend to us and thought
it might be an idea to write something about this to give you all something to think about again when talking to your teenagers...

We all do it when our teenagers come to the age of going to parties and having a blast...We tell them of the dangers of getting into the car with a drunk driver...How this person could have an accident and kill themselves or an innocent person either in their car or one they have an accident with even an innocent person on the footpath...We tell them that no matter what do not get in the car with a drunk driver...If they have no way to get home call us no matter where they or or what the time is and we will pick them up...

This is what happened in this home last weekend...My son was out at a party and it was decided they would head back to another party...The driver had not had a drink in front of Aidan so he assumed they were not over any limit...Well on the way home the police pulled over this person and breath tested them and discovered that they were just over the legal limit...Aidan was in shock and told me after that all he could hear was me saying be careful etc...ask them if they have had a drink before you get in otherwise call us...Well the police told this driver to get out from behind the wheel and did all the necessary things...They then handed the keys to another one of the people in the car who had a license as he had tested as 0 on the breath tester and told him he could drive...It was about at this time my son got out of the car and refused to get back in...His friends were confused at his actions but he refused to get back in and told them he would call me instead...

You see my son knew that this person had had an Ecstacy tablet and I also teach my kids about driving with someone under the influence of drugs is just as dangerous as a drunk driver...Think about it realistically alcohol is a drug too isn't it...

Aidan called me in tears and asked me to pick him up which I did I then told him how proud I was of him for making that decision and sticking too it...Drug Driving is dangerous too...I took him to the party they were going to and  told the other kids I knew that got in the car that I would tell their parents what they were up to if they got in it again...Some of them didn't realize the driver had had Ecstasy that night or that is what they told me...We need to not only inform our kids of drink driving....Drug driving is a big thing in this day and age...

I was surfing on the net when I came across some statistics and thought I would put them here...These are from the stop think SA website...

Road deaths linked to drugs
Between 2003 and 2005, 23% (53) of drivers or riders killed and tested for the presence of cannabis, speed and ecstasy, had detectable levels of one or a combination of these drugs. Furthermore, 43 of the 53 drivers (or 85%) killed who had detectable levels of these illegal drugs were found responsible for the fatal crash.

Pretty scary statistics there isn't it.....Please check the whole link out it tells you what effect different drugs can have on you while driving...

So Just remember when you do the whole Don't get in the car with a drink driver or the don't drink drive thing bring the drug thing into it also....Do explain to your kids about drug drivers too....If you drink drive your a bloody idiot is the way the phrase goes I think but shouldn't they say that about Drug driving too....This is just my thoughts and feelings on this a little of our experience....

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Thanks!

thankyou for a fantastic article.  I just hope that my kids will be strong enough to do what your son did that night.  Way to go!

It is alarming how much drugs are replacing alcohol as the thing to do on a friday/saturday night.  I spoke to an officer one day about this guy who was swerving all over the road and almost hit me 4 times.  His response in a half hearted manner was "he was probably on speed.  they all are now days".  my jaw hit the floor when he told me the stats of those who had been caught on speed compared to drink driving offences.

It is good that SA has brought in random drug testing as well, however i feel like they are doing to little too late.

Well done on teaching your son responsibility and saftey and thank you again for a great article.

Carmely.

Drugs n driving

Well done Angie, police are now cracking down on d.u.i (drivers under the influence) at presence they are testing new machines for drugs its like having drinking test but its for drugs. I would say your driver has had at least 1 drink and mixed it with drugs this has shown up on the test he has done and thus was asked to get out of the car. Not only that what most people don't relise is that either drinking or taking drugs slows your reactions down, so you will be much slower hitting the brakes in an accident if you are d.u.i.. Great article.

Best Wishes Blond.

Drugs n driving

Well another fantastic article as always. It is such a scary time we live in when you need to be testing drivers against drugs, but it is our reality now ans i am glad things are getting done about it before too many inocent people die or are injured.

Drugs is the one reason i won't let my boys in the car with their father, i have seen him driving after he has been awake for days and he could barely keep his eyes open!

It is just too scarey to think about having my boys in the car with that!

Staggering statistcis
WoW!

What a son you have, to take that stand and stand by what he knew was right.  Good on him.  He is such a credit to you at this time.

Peace

Great advice
What a responsible boy you have there, what a great parent you obviously are, most kids would not do what he did because of peer pressure.  The amount of times when I was young that I got into a car with a stoned driver horrifies me, I think I am definately one of the lucky ones, two of my friends were not so lucky.  When is drug testing going to be a part of the rbt's....

Why drink and drive when you can smoke dope and fly
Hi
Scary that this is no longer a joke but a everyday occurance.....
Scary when the breathalisers are starting to incorporate test to test for drugs on the breath as well...
Sorry but for me the day can't come fast enough when this is  a full reality.
Get the idiots of the roads...our kids are dying way too young from a lot of stuff without more.....
Makes you wonder after reading your series of articles if Australia should bring in the death penalty like overseas countries for traffiking and distributing
Wonder if it would slow it down or stop it altogether or are people really too stupid.....
Luv Deb

Drugs & driving

thought provoking article, many thanks!

that is one mature young man you have there - plenty of adults would not have had the guts to stand out from the crowd.

A credit to your parenting.

Drugs and Driving
Wow Angie
How crazy this had never even occurred to me, I always naively think if they have taken drugs then they would be in no state to do anything let alone drive!!!!!
See how I needed your drug information!!!!
Thanks for posting this
I'm very grateful
Good on your Aidan too, very gutsy of him to do the right thing
