Illegal drugs and Teens...Speed...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 38th)
Okay here is another drug in the Illegal drugs and teens articles I have been writing...Speed is the second most used illegal drug in Australia...It is very closely related to Ice...Ice is just a purer crystal for of amphetimine...Speed in the group of drugs known as stimulants which means it affects
the central nervous system and sends messages to your brain faster than normal....In this group also are drugs like ecstasy and Ice...

Some street names for this drug are... Meth, crystal, whizz, go-ee, shabu, paste, zip, eve, leopards blood, oxblood, snow, gogo and mdea...

Speed comes commonly in two forms...powder or liquid that is in a few different colours white to yellowish or brown or pink...The powder form can be fine to really course or even a really thick liquid...It comes in these different colours because of what the back yard manufacturers add to this amphetamine...It could vary from sugar, bicarbonate of soda, glucose, and ephedrine...

The way this drug is used is either through snorting by sniffing up the nose...swallowing...Injecting and can also be smoked through a pipe commonly known as snow cones...When this drug is mixed with depressants this can sometimes make the effects stronger and unpredicatable...

As with most drugs this drug too has its short term and long term effects...the short term effects can be but not limited to, Increased blood pressure and pulse rate, Increased breathing,Teeth grinding, Anxiety,  Restlessness, Insomnia, Fever and sweating, Flushing,  Dry mouth and lips, Dilated pupils, Nausea and vomiting and Mood swings...Some of the more severe side effects of this drug from long term use are, Paranoia, Hallucinations, Chronic sleep problems, Cracked teeth through grinding, High blood pressure, Panic attacks, Anxiety, Nervousness, Decreased emotional control, Severe depression, Violent behaviour , Speed psychosis, Nerve cell damage, Death from heart failure or suicide, High risk of addiction, especially if injected, HIV and hepatitis infections from sharing needles...

This drug is easily addictive or really habit forming...It gives a high that most users just love to be on giving them unlimited energy but also gives them the idea that they are 10 foot tall and bulletproof leaving the user unable to make good and safe decisions...Speeding is a way to forget your troubles and feel good and if the user is prone to having an addictive personality there could be trouble with this drug...It ruins lives the users and their familys'...It is found through reasearch that physical as well as verbal abuse are linked to the use of this drug...

Again I will say it and will keep saying it over and over...Communication is the key to help our teens say no to speed and all of these drugs...Knowledge is Power and I will say it again lets give our kids the knowledge to have the power to say NO...Drugs not only ruin the users life but also effects all around them...Please lets do the best we can to help our kids...

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Thank you for sharing this. I had quite a few friends who really screwed their lives up on these drugs and others.

Re: Illegal drugs and Teens...Speed...
I hit rock bottom with Speed a number of years ago. It happened all too quickly. Unfortunately all the education in the world can't prevent it from happening sometimes. Just letting you know, snow cones are marijuana packed in a cone with meth sprinkled over where its packed. But yes Meth (we called it meth, Ice was a high quality batch of meth on the streets) is generally smoked through a pipe, that's the social form of using it. Thanks for writing this article, it is good to get the awareness out there. Cheers *

Well done Angie, you sure know your stuff and looks like you've gone to a lot of research and trouble so again well done.  I too know what effect this drug and a few others can have on people and their relationships with others around them and it is heart breaking to see someone who was once a strong self assured person go down a road that turns them into something so unrecognisable.

We are very open in our house about drugs and the damage they can do as I really feel that it is more damaging to hide this hideous side of life from my children.  They are going to find out about it some day I'd rather it be from me.    I have that book Annies Story about the young teenage girl that took ecstasy and died which I indend on having my children read when they reach high school.  I hope they never resort to taking them.

Love your work Angie xxxxxxx

And another well written very informative peice of advice. Thankyou my friend

I have seen the effects of this awful drug first hand. Speed is what my ex is addicted to and it has changed him from a wonderful caring supportive man to just a mere shell of a person. He has gone from being a lottle over weight to having his bones visible under his skin. He looks pale and withdrawn and now suffers from depression aswell.

My boys will be given a strong warning against this and all drugs. The fact that their dad has no teeth due to his drug habit has made my boys brush their teeth morning and night because they don't want to look like their dad.

I have read all your advice on drugs and they all scare the heck out of me because i don't know much bout them. Speed scares me even more because i do know just how much it can destroy not only a family but a person, so completely in such a short amount of time. We have pics of Shane when Jacob was born and then other just a few months later and the amount of weight that he had lost and just the look on his face had changed so much it scares the hell out of me.

You try to avoid the obvous of admitting that someone you love has a drug addiction but once you do it all comes slamming down on top of you and you have to try to deal with it.

It would have been so easy to go down that road too. I couldn't tell you the amount of times shane offered it to me and said just see what it is like, just see what all the fuss is about. He would tell me to take the drugs and then maybe the house would be a little cleaner.

It is so not worth the effort. My house wasn't a pig sty is was just lived in, with two fiesty young boys to look after i was doing my best. I have to admit though there were times when i was exhausted that i thought it would have been a good idea. no way! Not worth the outcome.

My boys need at elast one sobor parent. I need to be there for them now and show then when they get old enough that drugs ruin your life and your family!
