Drugs and teens...Codeine...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 7th)
Codeine

Okay guys here is another one in the series of Illegal drugs and teens...This is something I really wanted to write about as I felt it was fairly important...Knowing of all the drugs out there available to threaten our children is important but this one is another that
kind of scares me...Not only with teens but people of all ages....i know it seems I am bombarding you all with all these drugs but I think on such a fantstic parenting site like Minti this info needs to be available...So after my ramble hehe Here some Info on codiene...

Codiene is an opiate so it is in the same group as Heroin and morphine...There are naturally occuring drugs and fully synthetic drugs in this group...Codiene in chemist bought products is synthetically made these days...

It can be taken in a few ways orally, via a needle in the muscles, and rectally...Codiene can not be injected into the vein as it can cause a heart attack swelling in the face and dangerous relaeases of histamines....Codeine freebase can be smoked which is also called chasing the dragon just as it is called when heroin is smoked...

Opiods affect your emotional reactions to pain...Opiods also can stimulate as well because they block the messages to your brain which are sent to keep your inhabitions..Repeasted use of this drug can cause alot of effects to your nervous system...stomach bleeding, kidney damage, liver damage, constipation, nausea, hangover, small pupils, blurred vision, impair your ability to drive, lowered heart rate, blood pressure and breathing problems,  convulsions, hallucinations, depression, sexual problems, tremors and even seizures...

If this drug is used more than about 2 to 3 weeks continuosly then there are real issues of an addiction arising with this narcotic...Even medium doses of narcotics can lead to a fatal overdose...Codeine also effects the users perception of their surroundings making it hard for them to make a concious decision or to even be fully aware of where they are and who is around...

Codiene is a fairly common drug that can be prescribed for pain...Alot of us take it regular short bursts...I know when I get a migrain I take codiene phosphate or mersyndol...Both contain codiene...What I am trying to say in this piece of advice is be careful of what your kids take... talk to them of the damages of drugs in general...Keep the lines of communication open and when you do do the drug talk with your kids,  you will be fully prepared and know what you are talking about because you can find just about any drug you want to know about in this series...Talk Talk Talk to your kids...

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Codeine
Hi
The codeine is one of the reasons a lot of cold and flu tabs now need a drivers licence to purchase along with pseudoefedrine.  Because it is the base for a lot more things.
A lot of people start vomiting  with codeine...myself included if i take more than one at a time....
Codeine in low doses can be purchased over the counter...In higher doses you need a prescription to buy it...doesn't this say something
Are you going to leave anything for us Ang
Lol

oooh

great article as usual!

It's so easy to think if somethings available over the counter it must be ok, even mild. I used to take codeine all the time for my migraines (on average I have 1 per fortnight) and was frustrated that they took days to clear. Then my dr told me the first day was my migraine - the subsequent days were codeine withdrawl headaches! So now I use Ibuprofen instead! You're not about to write an article about Ibuprofen in this series are you? Just kidding (I hope)!
