My Child is 15 turning 16...What to do with Centrelink...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 7th)
Well I thought I would write a bit of advice so that maybe someone will not go through the dramas we had to when it came to us doing this...Your eldest child is turning 16 soon and you recieve a centerlink benifit for them...Here in Australia when a child turns 16
they come off you family allowance and go onto a youth allowance of their own...So what can you do to prepare for this so that hopefully there will be no gap in the time they come off and the time they get their new payment...

Well here is what happened to us..I rang them just before Aidan turned 16 and got the papers out and looked at what I needed to do to claim this payment for him...I then called them 2 days after his birthday to tell them I needed to get a few more thing in place for his paper work to be ready...This made our experience really hard and a big pain...

For an easy experience with this transition from 15 to 16 this is what you should do...Obviously this advice is only useful to Australian residents...But maybe other people from other countries could do what they have learnt with their experiences in their own countries...

Firstly about two months before you 15 year old turns 16 ring centrelink and tell them of the pending birthday and ask for all the relevent forms you need for youth allowance...

Next if you do not have one already apply for an original full birth certificate...It does not matter if you have already showed centrelink this you need to do it again...

Collect all your childrens id like their school id and report cards are even worth points these days too...Make sure you have enough points for what they want...

When you have a birth certificate if you don't already then get the necessary forms to apply for a tax file number if your child does not already have one of these...

Fill in your forms and get all the necessary forms you need together including you tax return from the previous year and lodge these forms about a month before your child birthday...

That way they will be processed and it will be just waiting to change over...Centrelink can be hard to work with at the best of times but having a child removed from your family allowance to only have no payment for them for them for 4 to 6 weeks can stretched the budget because even though they are getting no payment they still need to eat and you need to buy things for them....

Unfortunately we did not get all this done in the right time frame and I do know just how hard that time can be...So hopefully this advcie will help someone who just might not know what to do to be prepared for the whole transition from 15 to 16....

Goodluck
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Re: My Child is 15 turning 16...What to do with Centrelink...

realy good advice,,

i did everything right also ,, but they wouldnt let me lodge it in untill they turned 16

i had to wait for hours to see someone also , and still had to go back the next day and my son had to take a day off school just so they can say is this your signiture omg some centre links are just not helpful at all.

now we have to go get a tax file number for them

i wont send it in as it will take 28 days for it to come back and center link only gives you 7 days to get it ,, ( how on earth do they figure out the time factors if they will never get there in time by requestiong one via post

and also sending your personal things by post is also something i dont want to do ,,

now i will call up the tax office make an oppintment to go in to get theirs and see if they also need to take a day off for that also grrrrrrr..

its not going to be fun taking my two year old on busses and trains alone either .

15 to 16
just a note for the aussie homeschoolers out there, centerlink does not recognise homeschool as full time education for 16 year olds and up therefore no youth allowance will be paid for those children for their final years of highschool, stupid rule really because homeschoolers need the money to buy school supplies which would otherwise be provided by the school at a lower cost because they buy in bulk... but yer anyway great article angie... just wanted you and others out ther to know this one if you were considering homeschooling. :)'s

Youth allowance /centrelink

My soon to be 15 yr old son and I were talking about this yesterday,so I have a little time yet .My family payment pays our home loan and other bills as I also get $250.00 a week put into the same account to cover other bills.

He seems to think the youth allowance money is his to do with what he wants,I told him yesterday that I need that money to feed him clothe and for his schooling (free schooling yea right)He has X box, computer ,mobile phone ,mp3, play station and a $500.00 BMX bike as he used to do racing (which he broke due to treating it wrong)Poor boy he is so hard done by.What is it about kids today they really don't seem to appreciate what they do have and dwell on what they don't have.He is a good kid just dosent realize how lucky he is.Anyway I have 12 mths yet to solve this problem yet ,so we just see who wins.

Here's a question for you,

How many out there give the youth allowance to their kids and how many keep it in the family budget? My mum kept it as it helped pay the bills and gave me only a small amount to do with as i wished. How do you deal with the money? Thanks.

Centrelink
It goes into our family budget...It is provided for him to attend school(free education that is a whole nother story) his clothes his food and his entertainment...My son costs us more than what centrelink provides for him believe me...Hehehe...He gets money when he needs it within reason and he always has clothes and food in his belly....I have friends who let their child have theirs but they have to pay board etc...It is the childs choice where the money goes and my son chooses our account....
Cheers

Hi
And bear in mind something i have recently found out...if you are on a benefit and get full family assistance part b then be prepared to drop a lot of money.  If you have 3 children  and get the full family allowance for them not only do you lose the large family supplement  but also the payment for your child.
You have a choice...you can either get $40 a fortnight for them or put them onto youth allowance and get $80 a fortnight for them.   Your own payment though drops by $160.
This is for the lower income earners.
Why the government or anyone for that matter thinks you can raise your child and keep them in school on $80 a fortnight after 16 i don't know.....
But like she said to me.....it goes up again when they turn 18......well woop de doo.....
So be prepared
Thanks Ang
Luv Deb

i think we all think that but then we remember if centrelink was not there where would we be... no money no food no home..... It sucks we have to grin and bear it lol
hey it took them 2 years to put me on a benefit even though i was living away from home.... because my parents earned to much the only other way i could get a benefit was to be living out of for 2 years or living in a defacto relationship for 1 year or my parents could say they kicked me out and they dont want to see me living under their roof ever again..... I was 16 when i first moved out of home so do you think there might be something wrong with those requirements...

Re: Centrelink

oh im hearing u, im not a parent but im a nursing student an i want to specialise in children so im a big nerd an into these kinds of things, but yeah im 21 studying 5 subjects, (4 is full time) and im still considered dependent on my parents an get NO youth allowance at all. When i rang centerlink they suggested that the only way i could get payments is if my parents kicked me out or i can quit work and get unemployment payments, or HAVE A BABY!

So basicly if u want to be a productive member of society and set ur life up no help but if you CHOOSE not to work an im all for unemployment payments for legit cases but i dont think u should quit to get them lol or just have some kids ur all good, hahaha

an just a bit of advice make sure your talking to someone who actually knows what they are talking about, my boyfriend was 20 and independent and couldn't work for a few months cause he was sick an we were told that he couldn't get any payments because he was under 21. he could it was just called something else, u just have to know the right questions to ask... :)
