Toilet Training and 3 year olds

Kia by Kia Walking(March 2007) (rank 500+)
my 3 year old has basically been toilet trained for a year but refuses to do poos on the toilet so much that he lets it out slowly bit by bit all day and is going through so many pants - it's driving me crazy! How do I get my
little man to sit on the toilet. It must be hurting him too!

Children learn at a very young age that there is one thing that you cannot control and that is toilet training. My son, I thought he would go to school in diapers.  One day when when I was trying to toilet train this young man he pulled this stunt. He went into the living room and removed his diaper, did his business on the floor got up went into the bathroom and got a wad of toilet paper and went back and cleaned up his mess then tried to put his diaper back on. It was then I  got the message "I'll do it when I'm ready Mom" . I left him in diapers and ignored any form of training attempt, sure enough about 3 weeks later we were at his Grandparents for dinner when he came to me and said "Mom I have to go poo, I took him to the bathroom he did what he went for and away he went, about 2 hours later he repeated the same thing. It was then that I  took him out of diapers and low and behold he was totally trained in two weeks without all the fuss. He was my first born and I learned quite a lesson from that experience and never had a problem with the other two, needless to say I waited until they told me and they did in their own time no tears no fuss and trained earlier than the others. Never under estimate the intelligence of these little people.

Toilet capers

LOL ahhh the toilet testers!!!!

My 3 y old is also toilet training at the moment and refuses to do the poo on the toilet, she will wait until night time when we have asked her repeatedly if she needs to do poo and been told repeatedly that she doesn't for us to put on her nappy and then guaranteed within 5 minutes there is that pungent odour from below indicating the missing poo!!!!  All we can do is smile because we know that for some reason wee comes naturally but she just doesn't like the feel of doing poos in the toilet or on the potty.

I just hope that isn't still like this when she goes to school lol

potty
Good article!  I have just bought the famous potty chair!  I have always let my daughter in the bathroom when I go and always ask her after she poos in her diaper if she is stinky.  My daughter is only 16 months old, but a couple of things she has done showed me she was starting to associate what potty is.
1) when in the bathtub, she would say potty and then within 5 minutes there would be poo in the tub
2) when waking up in the morning or after naps she would say "poop" if she was dirty

I have not totally started the whole potty-training, but just let her sit on it every now and then.  If she goes great, if she doesn't that's OK too!  It is so cute to see the expression on her face when she does go.  It's almost of a look of...."hmm, what is going on here"  You can just tell she is really thinking about it!
If she isn't interested in sitting, her diaper goes right back on and we go about our business.  I don't push it!
I figure, start the association and one day she it will just happen!

my three year old
LOL I have a three year old and thought he would be wearing nappies at school too.  He decided a few weeks ago to just go to the toilet and left his nappies (clean) in the bathroom, he did it a few day running, and how wears underwear!  The only thing now, is not to use a whole roll of toilet paper for one poo.

well said.
There is no set time line to do toilet training. It's all up to the child. It's great you recognised the signals of when to not try and when to try. Good article.
