Amber Alert Child ID Kit

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(March 2007) (rank 95th)

I don’t usually post about products on this blog. In general, I also tend to ignore the dearth of USB-related products out there (USB Beer Cooler, USB Light Saber, etc.)

But this Amber Alert Child ID Kit from Kingston caught my eye. You’ll probably never

have to use it. But if your child gets kidnapped and it helps your find them, it’s well worth the $29.95.

Here’s how it works. You plug the password protected, encrypted 512MB USB Flash drive into your computer. (You set up all the security, but it sounds more intimidating than it is.)

The drive has a form in it that looks like the image on the right. (See a big version at my blog)

You fill it our for your kid and after fifteen, twenty minutes you’ve got all the important information in one spot. Pretty useful in it’s own right if they stopped there.

But they also integrated it with the Amber Alert system, which is a network that springs into action when a child is reported missing.

You could definitely put together your own DIY Child ID kit with a USB drive and an excel spreadsheet. (If you don’t spring for this, you should probably do that anyway).

Props to Engadget for finding this one.

This is very interesting - I am sending the resident techno head the link to your advice.  (Can't be bothered walking next door - isn't that disgraceful?).

I was about to ask if it was any good outside Uncle Sam's Island - however Izzy has answered me below - great stuff!  Lui : )

Re: Amber Alert Child ID Kit

Well, as long as your computer has a USB port, you can use this. It's small, it's just the lengh of my thumb and as wide. So you can put it on a key chain so you can have it with you. The main point is that it has a place of a lot of information about your child; complete physical description, medical condition, web addresses of your children (if they have any), names, addresses of all people who have direct contact with your children...and you can put a recent picture of your kids too. SO that should your child go missing and you go to the authorities, you don't have to fumble for information during a high stress situation.

In the US and Canada, it is used to issue an Amber Alert - a way to get very specific information out to the public of a missing child that is believed to be in danger. But like I said, I think it's useful to have even if you're outside these countries.

I love this. I just got mine, but mine is a little more expensive ($49) because I got the multiple children one.

I've just loaded several pictures of the kids and got information in. I'm not done though.

I highly suggest this for everyone, even if they're not the US or Canada. It's useful for everyone to have these information handy incase their children go missing.

Great Idea, gotta find it!

That sounds like a great idea. I like it. I can't see the picture though, it has a big red x saying I don't have permission to view it. (thought i'd let ya know)

I went to the website and I will have to see if they have one for Canada because it would be great. Thanks for giving us this advice :)
