Giving Birth Soon? - An embarassment saving device.

Anonymous Author (March 2007)

Close to giving birth, I found my pelvic floor muscles starting to weaken, and with the baby moving around, everytime she stretched and put pressure on my bladder I would find myself bolting for the toilet!  It really hit home that this was a problem when I was walking home

from the shop and stopped to talk to a friend, to have bubby press on my bladder and I lost it. It was quite embarassing to have wet myself in the street like that! My friend gave me a ride home and a towel to sit on. The next day she payed me a visit and gave me a wonderous gift I'd never have thought of - a packet of incontinence pads.

At first I was almost offended, but knowing she meant well I considered the benefits - if I wore one it would save me the embarassment of having that experience happen again. I soon found they were a blessing in a few different ways:

  • Losing control of my bladder by baby applying excessive pressure happened once more before I gave birth.
  • When my water broke, the pad caught it all so I wasn't embarassed by that either.
  • After birth, I slept for a couple of hours and when I awoke the first thing I needed to do was go to the toilet. I had put on one of these "adult nappies" before going to sleep, and thank God I did! As I stood up, every bodily fluid made a quick exit - and none of it was noticed by anyone but me.
  • For a couple of days after the birth my pelvic floor muscles were still rather weak and if I coughed or sneezed, I didn't have to be embarassed by my lack of ability to retain bladder control.
  • I was a heavy bleeder for a few days after the birth, and I never once had a problem with staining bedsheets or clothing.

Incontinence pads are large, bulky, and uncomfortable, but then so was I in the last month of pregnancy, so we kind of suited each other. The little bit of physical discomfort in wearing them was more than a fair price to pay for being saved from these embarassing moments.

After my experience with this childbirth, with my next two children, as soon as I reached 8 months pregnant I went and bought myself a packet of incontinence pads - and I never looked back. They came in useful with every birth and I'd recommend them to every mother-to-be.

Re: Giving Birth Soon? - An embarassment saving device.

I too have used pantyliners designed for weak bladders for most of my pregnancy as I was too afraid that when I sneezed I would pee and now that I am due hopefully if my waters go it will save my embarassment. They are no longer bulky things used for old people and the ones I use are of a great brand especially designed for the problem and are no thicker then the average panty liner.

This is certainly great advice and I am glad someone found the courage to talk about it.

Great advice! No one ever tells you these things are more common the more kids you have. If only more women had your guts to tell it like it is......

you poor thing, i know with this being my fourth pregnancy i am finding it harder to control myself yet (touch wood) i havent had this happen i may just save myself from the embarressment now and go get me some of those pads, thank you for sharing your story with us as it is a part of being pregnant and not all mothers to be have this problem it is nice to know when one day it may just happen and we can save ourselves from being humiliated from the not so nice public.

thanks again great advice

my mum told me that if i was in the supermarket and my waters broke (or bladder!!) all i had to do to cover it up was to grab a bottle of lemonade and smash it on the floor!

giving birth soon

Great article ! I wore sanitary napkins (for menstual cycle) for several months. I did this for several reasons :

I did not know I was pregnant until five months and by chance anything went wrong I would see any discharge.

When sneezing, laughing, hiccupping, etc. I would always have a small pee pee "leak".

And I wore the pads because once my water did break, there would be something there to catch it ... and it did !

Great article and advice !

by best friend mr. toilet
oh dear I remember those days. I slept on the side closer to the toilet, hardly ever slept for the last 3 m and dreded drinking anything (mind you I went to see lord of the rings in cinema about 2 weeks before I gave birth so I dont remember half of the movie as I was concentrating on my bladder so much) oh and plus I vomited for almost the whole 9 m so I would honestly say that my toilet was my best friend and fav room in the house (and no one was allowed to lock the door so I can run in anytime)

If only you knew this then, huh? I was so lucky that my more experienced friend was there for me.
