HELLP Syndrome - Are you at risk?

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 13th)

Recently another Minti member asked me if I knew anything about HELLP syndrome as she is wanting to get pregnant, but apparently it seems to run in her family and she wanted to know of the risks involved before she fell pregnant. So I promised her I would do some

research. So here you have it. Does this run in your family??

HELLP stands for

  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Elevated Liver enzymes and
  • Low Platelet count

It is a potentially fatal pregnancy complication which can occur during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth. Many doctors consider it to be closely related to Pre-Eclampsia.

    Symptoms can include

  • Progressive nausea and vomiting
  • Upper abdominal pain (particularly around the liver area)
  • Headache
  • Vision problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver problems (bad liver count)
  • Anaemia

How do doctors test for HELLP Syndrome?

A series of blood tests are run along with urine tests and frequent blood pressure monitoring.

    Treatment consists of

      Bed rest
    • Blood transfusions (sometimes, not always)
    • Fetal monitoring
    • And administering of magnesium sulfate  to prevent seizures.
    • Corticosteroids may be given if premature induction is neccessary, to help prepare baby's major organs for life on the outside world.

    I hope this helps :)

Hey Mony, great advice. hellp syndrome makes you very sick, and shuts down your body organs ready for death. If not treated it is fatal. It IS an agressive form of preeclampsia, the only cure known so far is to deliver the baby so the mother suvives.  When i had hellp syndrome i had incrediable pain in both my chest and back, i had vomiting and couldn't go to the toilet (nothing would come out). Little did i know that my kidney's had shut down and my lungs and heart were begining to shut down,  this is why i had the back pain my kidney's weren't working. They delivered our baby and i was on life support in a drug induced coma. The Dr told my hubby that our baby had passed away and not to expect me to come out of the coma. Make no mistake Hellp syndrome is very serious, if not treated you can die from it.

Mony, thanks for the offer but i would like to get the word out there. You see hellp syndrome is big overseas but little is known about it in Australia. I wish every woman could learn and know the signs so they don't have to go through the pain i did, the pain in my chest and back was so severe i begged god to take me with him. If you or i or others can put the word out about hellp syndrome and make other woman aware of it then they will know the signs and can get it checked out and maybe have a better chance than i did. Let me make this very clear though i was a healthy woman for 30 odd yrs and then 1 night when i was 5mths pregnant wham it hit without warning, no signs no symptoms nothing just a wopping pain in the chest and back to which i called 000 and got an ambulance out here on a code call (lights and sirens). Both women and Dr's need to learn from the rare cases that we do have here in Australia.

Thank you so much Mony hon for putting this subject out there.

    Best Wishes Blond.

Thanks Angie, the trouble with my case is it went on for 10 days before a Dr finally diagnose me with hellp syndrome, up until then no one knew what it was. I went to the hospital and was told  i had an ulcer and was given a tablet and sent home.

No your not being rude, after my ordeal we went back to the hospital to discuss what had happened at length with a proffesor who is familiar with H.E.L.L.P. One of the things he told me was if i were to get pregnant again they would monitor me alot more closely but sadly there is a 30% chance i would get hellp again. As this all took place last Jan 06 we are still thinking about having more children but are leaning towards no more, simply for the fact we don't want to get 1/2 way through the pregnancy and lose another child or even my being at risk. But we are keeping an open mind.

    Best Wishes Blond.

Omg Im so sorry you had to go thru what you did! Before my friend asked me about it I had never heard of it before. So Im really glad I looked it up. This really needs some more exposure. What a terrible thing to have happen. Pregnancy is supposed to be a beautiful time in your life, not something that destroys you and your family. If mothers can have it diagnosed early we have won half the battle.
