In A Mess as Baby Overdue!!!!!!!

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 2nd)

So your pregnancy will last for exactly 40 weeks !

Baby always arrives on their due date !

The Scan Date they give you is always accurate !

I had my first baby early so all other babies will be early too !

Sorry

everyone but in most cases this is absolute rubbish!!!!

I was fortunate enough to never suffer with Post Natal Depression...... but then I didn't need to, I had already suffered big time with Ante Natal Depression.
Excluding my miscarriage the four babies I carried to full term were born at :

Baby No 1 Length of Pregnancy 42 - 46 weeks -
Depending on how much you want to believe the scan dates I was given, I also had 4 false start Labours with this baby, with contractions getting down to every 3 - 4 minutes but they would miraculously stop the second I walked in the doors of the maternity unit

Baby No 2 Length of Pregnancy 43 weeks -
Once I got to the 40 weeks I was promised to be induced each checkup on the following week, but it was always decided as a bad idea, it wasn't until we put our foot down and insisted that something happened and even then it was natural I think I was so stressed that Labour just kicked off, the delivery was very traumatic and we nearly lost her as she was very stressed herself but after a good checkup she was declared fine

Baby No 3 Length of Pregnancy 42 weeks - This baby was induced at 42 weeks and that was because I made it clear from the start that I wasn't going to go through another traumatic delivery with a far too overdue baby and risk nearly losing this one. Even so I had to endure 3 attempts of induction before finally labour started

Baby No 4 Length of Pregnancy 40 weeks 5 days -
Yay my early baby Normal start but a cord around the neck made this another worrying delivery however a few minutes of air and he was fine.

The reason for me writing this article was to tell you that Ante Natal Depression really does exist

The worst thing for any expectant mother to have to go through when they are overdue is listening to well meaning people make "funny" comments
Here are some favourites I had to put up with:

"Oh you're still here then?"

Duh!!! No I just left !!!

"Are you sure its not wind!" Ha ha
Hysterical laughter before you wind them!!!!

"Never mind love, it won't be long now !"
Oh right cos you're the expert !

"When the apple is ripe it'll fall from the tree"
You what??? Isn't that when they are bruised and damaged

Or my absolute favourite

"You not had the baby yet then ?"
of course can you not see him/her

I also used to cry and weep all the time and snap the heads off of anyone who even looked at me. I refused to answer the phone, I refused to WADDLE down the street, I refused to invite friends around.......
I just wanted my baby and I couldn't understand why the due date had been and gone leaving me still pregnant

So, my advice to everyone is NEVER approach an overdue pregnant woman unless exercising extreme caution
NEVER make jokey comments to overdue pregnant women
NEVER be sympathetic to overdue pregnant women unless you have been there yourself
In fact unless you know what an overdue pregnant women is going through
LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!!

Re: In A Mess as Baby Overdue!!!!!!!

All my bubs were overdue though not past 14 days.

I think it should work the other way also ie. if a woman is happy to go naturally past 2 weeks then it should be respected.

Isn't it miserable Cazza

With my first at one point they changed my date to the 1st August, originally it was the 1st September, he was actually born on the 14th September, so technically it felt like I was 6 weeks overdue !!!!!!! I was not a nice person to be around at that time LOL

I'm so pleased somebody actually understands!!! I am currently 5 days overdue with my second son (my first was 6 days overdue) i have been 3cm dilated for over a week and every time i see a doctor they give me a false hope by saying 'wont be long' or 'i bet by this weekend you'll be holding your baby' as if thats not bad enough i have relentless e mails, calls and comments such as the 'you still going?' 'ooh he must be comfortable, he'll come when he's ready just enjoy it' ENJOY IT?????? I havent slept for weeks im tired cranky and frankly over it and people think their comments are wanted??? Thank You Thank You Thank You for making me smile for the first time in weeks!!!!

Re: In A Mess as Baby Overdue!!!!!!!

Sound advice and definitely worth taking.  Love the last comment this is so true - even for women who are not fed-up and wishing it were all over the constant daft questions are enough to drive anyone round the bend!

It amazes me the number of people who ask these questions and say these things who have actually been in this circumstance - memory is so short sometimes.
Peace

So true i think we have all heard these comments and it becomes a joke and very stressful! Midwives wherthe worse i found and wen in labour with my first got told come on now no need to be so vocal my reply was "why dont you just shut up and you have it instead of me" lol ( was on drugs and gas so i really wouldnt normally say that to someone)

Re: In A Mess as Baby Overdue!!!!!!!
LOL.  I love it!  All four of mine were overdue, though only one had to be induced!  Medical staff and trained professionals like to think they know best, but they don't!

I've even had a midwife (when I was induced) tell me that it was just the gel working!  Yeah right!  Baby #3 and she was in a hurry!  She didn't want to call my husband in as she was convinced that I was hours away!  15 mins later, there was my little girl! lol.  and hubby missed it!

I was down with my last 2, just wanting them out, so I reckon I had exactly what you described, but noone has ever mentioned it before.

Thanks for writing this.  Apart from being informative, it was also somewhat amusing, especially the last part! lol.

Re: In A Mess as Baby Overdue!!!!!!!
I am very happy that you made it through all of that and have healthy children.  It is frustrating.  For my most recent child I kept trying to tell the doctor that the contractions often times do not register.  Of course...the nurse was mean to me and was telling me I would go home soon because it was false labor.  You should have seen the look on her face when my water broke as she was telling me that.

Re: In A Mess as Baby Overdue!!!!!!!

hey,

OMG I remember all those comments I was 7 days overdue with my first, and I am hoping to god that my second (5 months preg) is not overdue.  It was just getting into summer when I was due really hot and uncomfortable lucky I had a great doc who had me induced on the 7th day over.   I tried some of the tricks, sex, castor oil, hot baths, long walks nothing works it just makes you feel worse.

Wow I really hope this baby is not overdue!!!

Overdue baby girl !
I was overdue.  The date given to me was 6 but i delivered on 12.  It was so sad for me too, when people cldnt shut their mouths and keep calling and asking.  I remember one of our fly member wld call as early as 7.30 a.m in the morning and ask details.  First of all, since i was so big i cldnt sleep all night and then when i get the early mrng sleep, i`d get distracted by her phone call, even after knowing frm my voice that i`m speaking to her still when i`m in bed.  I`d be so frustrated, my husband wld keep asking me to hung up the phone but i didn`t want to be mean.  I was just sucking it up.  Too many people were asking me when there wld be some party, fly gatherings, etc.etc.  I got so tired until i told my husband that y did we have to give them our due date.  So now we have learnt a lesson that-  NEVER EVER GIVE THEM THE DUE DATE.  JHust lie to them that we are not quite sure, coz i forgot as to when my periods were last.  So now with my 2nd baby i will be prepared.  Let the baby be a surprise to them.  If my baby is gonna be due in Oct i shall tell them i am due in Nov.  Atleast i dnt have to answer too many questions.

If Male Doctors had babies
Then women would totally be treated better!!! My second was over due and my doc. said,we'll see how you are when I get back from holidays,Ha,Ha,Ha. Bas***d was gone a month!!! I tried to see other doc. and finally this one would see me. My doc. was the head guy around and I guess no one wanted to "step on his toes". I was over six weeks overdue which the new doc. wouldn't believe until he checked the records. He was shocked and asked me how I could let this happen???!!! Dddduuuuhhhh? With a toddler and house and business ....sure it was my choice to be in that way. Had beautiful son ...finally!

Excellent Advice

I was not too bad being overdue with my first, I was extremely relaxed and not worried at all....I have no idea why.

With my second I was extremely tense. I bit everyones head off even my mum, who had come 600kms to stay with us. My In-Laws rang nearly everyday which didn't help. I don't understand why people especially other mum's think it's cute to say "oh..haven't you gone yet!" You think they would understand.

Overdue

I know what that feels like, my son was 10 days over and I had to be induced, and my daughter was 5 days over.  Some people have no idea what it is like.  I too suffered post natal depression, and when my daughter was 6 months old, I got asked when the baby was due.

Tact...some people have none.

I was overdue

Supposed delivery day I was staring angrily at the tv watching the clock cursing that nothing was happening yet. Day 2 depressed. Day 3 extremely unpredictable. Day 4 still pissed. Day 5 I was at the doctors office telling and cursing at the doctor that I didn't want to be pregnant anymore and to do something about it. I had already gone for a drive down a bumpy road, had sex you name it I did it.

Comments like that when you're over due are really annoying (I got them from 7 months on cuz I was a whale! couldn't wear lace up shoes cuz I couldn't reach my feet and breath at the same time, lol). Something almost as bad is when people ask you when you're due... after you've had the baby! ARGH!! miss 6 was overdue by one week!!!! that was one of the hardest weeks of my life!!! not only did I feel like I was going to explode but where I live was in the middle of hottest week on record!!! I was very fortunate with the hospital I gave birth at. Their policy is not to allow any woman to go more than 7 days overdue. They induced me on the 6th morning and I gave birth the following evening!!!!!!!!!!! hooray was amongst the many things I said.

thanks for another great article helen. You are so right, be very careful when approaching an overdue pregnant woman!!!! we can be prone to many things!!!

That is absolutely terrible I am sorry your family went through that.
With my daughter her heartbeat was being monitored and it suddenly dropped from about 140 to just 20!!! On delivery it really looked like we were going to lose her and I didn't see her for ages as the paediatrician whisked her away. Mine had a happy ending but I'm so sorry for your ending.
I feel very passionate now about mothers going overdue and feel that everyone should be induced once they get to 10 days over, its just too risky to leave it
Hugs to you and your family

I went +12 with my first (tho checking my diary notes later I realised I was at least +14!) and I had "have you had the baby now" far too much (like, yes and Ive left it on its own at home!).

To my disbelief I even had someone think I was overdue with no.2 when I was only 6 months - I'd only gained 14lbs by then, right on target - she's lucky to still be standing!

As I was at great pains to point out, 40 weeks is only an average, the technical definition of "term" is 37 - 42 weeks, so when people said "how overdue are you?" I would snap back at them "I'm not overdue til I'm over 42 weeks!"

Good advice Nell!

Thank you
I hated people being nice to me when they had had all their babies either early or on time !!
You cannot possibly know what it is like to be overdue unless you have been yourself
Did you really go so far over thats awful. How did you ever cope ?????

Well, with Emma I was absolutely convinced she would be +7 over the EDD anyway, so I was mostly climbing the walls in the last few days as I personally did not want to be induced until at least +14 unless the doctors could give me a good medical reason (eg lack of amniotic fluid, drop in heartrate, placenta starting to fail, etc), so they were monitoring me in the second week. When she came out the placenta was good and healthy ie working fine, and the biggest any of them had seen! With Soph, who PTL was only +3 EDD I was planning a homebirth so I was even more desperate to avoid going too far over as I had some midwives saying no HB over +10 and others sayying no HB over +14. I'd done my research on induction and overdue babies so I was making an informed choice.

Personally I think the EDD just raises women's stress levels, like it's the golden day and everything MUST be going wrong if you're either "early" or "late" by a week or two. Each baby is as unique in how long they need to be inside as they are unique in what they're like once they're out LOL, so I think the midwives should be encouraged to monitor each baby individually rather than apply the "rule book" to them. But that's my personal opinion!

I found the UK Homebirth site on Yahoo (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/homebirthUK ) excellent for discussing these things and helping me make my informed decision - strongly recommend it! And Angela Horn's unbiased webiste  http://www.homebirth.org.uk/ with lots of useful links.

But every mum is different and some people prefer induction to going 10 days over - your choice!
