Seeking Advice

HarrisonsMommy by HarrisonsMommy Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 59th)

I think Minti is a fantastic site.  And the volumes of advice available is fantastic.  I do think, though, that there needs to be a bit more of responsibility within the members giving advice and also asking for and taking advice.

When asking for advice on something

like how to parent a child, where there is really no right or wrong answer, Minti is very valuable.  Because there are so many differing ways to do things, getting advice and suggestions from so many sources is priceless.

I have seen a few situations where one person is asking for advice or answers regarding medications.  This has been for different problems (the two that come to mind are palpitations and infertility).  When it comes to a diagnosed medical problem, I think the advice (on what to take for said problem) should be left to the treating doctor.

I have no issues with suggestions for non-drug related treatments.  But that being said, any herb or natural substance, vitamins, and foods need to be discussed with your doctor because some of these can be contraindicated (not recommended), they can effect the drugs different ways, such as increasing or decreasing their effectiveness.

The responsibilty ultimately lies with the person recieving the advice.  And I would say to you, speak with your doctor, not a venue such as Minti for suggestions on what drugs to take for your condition.  What works for one may be deadly wrong for you.

Increase in medical questions...
Is it my imagination, or has there been an increase in people asking for medical advice lately?  When this happens, I usually check the answers already there, and as long as the majority of responses recommend seeking professional advice, I usually don't comment on it at all.

However I have been alarmed at some of the questions asked when people haven't ALREADY sought advice for chronic problems... Oh well, lucky they do have minti, where people tell them to get professional assistance.

Disclaimer
Nell and Cook clan, thanks for the comments.  I agree that for the most part, people seek confirmation, similar stories, and that sort of things when seeking advice on Minti.  And yes, there is the disclaimer at the bottom of the page, in faded print, where no one reads, so Minti is safe.  But, I have come across 2 situations regarding medications where people were told to take something for a medical diagnosis and I just thought I would remind both advice seekers and givers that those matters should be left to the professionals.  Although, I wouldn't and you may not, but many would take the advice of a lay person with regards to a medical problem and sometimes need reminding of where they should seek advice.  Thats all.

Good Point
I do think though that in the majority the advice given and the answers given to medical matters are usually a resounding "Ask a prefessional"
I feel most people who have medical problems really seem to come here for confirmation that they should in fact see a doctor
Very valid point made though
xx

Minti is a place that you can talk to other people about their experiences with the use of a certain drug too...It does say at the bottom of advices about seeking professional opinions etc.... But a good reminder for all thanks for sharing
