dealing with my clingy toddler

Anonymous Author (March 2007)

Usually they're clingy with only mommy, and only once she sees you. When i peep at my little one when she's with gran, she's so sweet, but as soon as she spots me she changes into a little squeeler who wants me to carry her all the time. I've been

learning how to adapt to the change.

There are times when i just let her cry. I simply tell her that i love her and will be with her as soon as i'm done.

I take her to the room that i'm busy in, sit her on the floor beside me and keep her occupied with something unusual while i finish up. I keep talking to her so she doesnt feel ignored.

If she's clingy when i get back from work, i dont ignore her. I come down to her level and give her the attention she wants. this usually calms her down instead of wanting me to carry her. then her father takes over and she's forgotten about clinging to me altogether.

Everytime we went out for dinner or something she wouldnt leave me alone. i had to either walk around carrying her or sit with her away from everyone else. I ended up not enjoying the time and being  tired & aggrivated cos i'm the only one she wants. During the clingy times, i dont really go out with her to prevent us both from being crabby, or if i do , i take her nanny with for assistance. or , i leave her with her granny.

Hope these tips work for anyone who's experiencing something similar....

Clingy Child
My 2 year old son is VERY clingy with me to the point where i am the only one who can put him to bed, change his nappy, get him dressed and the list goes on. Mind you if i'm not home he is quite happy for my husband to do it.

Great ideas
My daughter got so clingy that at 16 months one of my friends, an experienced mum of 4 & Registered Childminder, took on the challenge and minded her for 2 x 4hours per week. The first time, E cried & screamed solidly for all 4 hours! My friend said she'd never had a child cry beyond 3 hours before, and warned me this might take  few weeks to work. The next day I dropped her off with some trepidation. 4 hours later I returned to a quiet house! She had cried for 10 minutes and then given up and got on with playing!!! And it worked, she was less clingy with me in the rest of life too. Worth a try, if you know a good childminder or have a brave friend!
