Travelling by train with young children

mcm by mcm Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 4th)

Just a few seconds is all it takes for a pram to end up on the train tracks. So here is a few points to remember when travelling with young children on a train.

  • Hold onto pram
  • Park pram sideways parallel to tracks or edge
  • Apply brakes when on train or platform
  • Travel near front of train or where you will be seen by driver or guard

This information is from a dvd we were sent from City Rail in New South Wales (Australia) It is scary watching it.

My big boy who is almost 4 loves trains. I don't drive so we do use public transport often. My boy's first word at 8mths was "train" (or 'twain'!) He adores going on trains. We are lucky in Melbourne the rail system is quite safe (at least compared to what we experienced in Sydney) but once my boy at 2-3 years old did fall down - one leg - and it gave us all a fright. I had all 3 kids with me - bub in pram. My 7 year old was afraid to travel by train for a while. But we were lucky - we were at the front of the train and the driver got off to check us - he was very friendly and even picked up the book off the track which my boy dropped. This involved actually moving the train back. We were very lucky.

Watch out for back packs too....
You need to be careful of back packs too.. When leaving you don't want your back pack to be stuck in the door.. So when travel with a bag on a train, taxi ( even elevators) anything with doors always have it in front of you or slung under your arm....

So true
Sorry we are spoilt by safety in Melbourne :p
The Sydney trains (the older ones and the nasty tunnel in the city) truly scared me - no kidding. But gotta love the monorail and ferries. We don't have either in Melbourne.
