Pimples...to pop or not...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 7th)
We have heard them used or copped the names ourselves...Pizza face, Zit head, Puss bubble, Custard zits and I am sure alot of  people could add a few but...Pimples are an issue to alot of teenagers and even women at that time of the month....

Pimples can cause not only embarrassment for the person who has them but they can also cause social isolation that can cause a whole heap of other issues for the person living with them...

There are a few factors that contribute to the onset of pimples...In teenagers and women they are most commonly caused by a hormonal change...When you get a clogged pore or follicle this will cause pimples... Bacteria gets in  these clogged pores or follicles and multiplys causeing irratation and inflamation which in turn causes an irratated pimple...Sometimes when walls of this pore of follicle burst it causes other problems like acne...

What really prompted me to write this article but was when I was a kid my mum told me to not squeeze my pimples because it would send pus into my brain and give me a brain abscess...I jsut used to laugh it off and think she was joking...Mum has acne scaring badly and she was always worried I too would get it...Well the other day I took Aidan to the doctor as he had got an infection in a squeezed pimple in his back and the doctor was scolding him for squeezing his pimples...He then asked him if he squeezed pimples on his face also...Aidan answered yes to this and then the doctor went in to story mode and showed us some literature about it....

It seems when he was a younger doctor a man he went to uni with squeezed a pimple on his face...By doing this he then got an infection in it which cause a boil type abscess which in turn  then caused a brain abscess and gave him brain damage...It is true...Scary but true...It has happened and anyway when you squeeze them they take longer to heal because all the bacteria is pushed further into the skin....

I think as lexi wrote in her article here...That we need to encourage our kids to take the best care they can of their skin and use the appropriate things needed to do this...So next time you get the urge to pop that pimple on your face think of this you could not only be leaving a scar from squeezing this but you could also cause permanent damage to your brain....

Thanks for taking the time to read this
Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Pimples and Squeezing?

As a former acne sufferer myself, I have a full knwledge of just how distressing the condition can be to the self concious teenager.....now as a lecturer in Beauty Therapy, I can offer the following advice:

1) Hormones are the key to this problem so an alternative therapy, especially Reflexology will help balance hormonal disorders and treat stress which can also trigger or worsen the condition - treat the cause, not just the symptom!

2) Exercise in the fresh air speeds up the rate at which skin cells regenerate and converts excess adrenalin and will benefit acne sufferers

3) UV exposure helps, your GP/Doctor should refer you to a dermatologist if you request to maybe have UV therapy under controlled conditions - (never expose your skin to the sun without a good SPF cream on)

4) A balanced diet free from extra fats and highly processed foods will help - don't drink tea, coffee, fizzy drinks or acidic fruit juices - have water instead

5) Stripping the skin in a bid to dry out pimples can force it to produce more oil and further inflame the condiiton - gentle cleasing and toning and a light moisturising lotion is necessary morning and and night

6) Salon Treatments can be really effective, there are many forms of Light Therapy which can benefit the skin as well as the "old faithful" treatments which use Galvanic currents and high frequency  and once the condition improves, vacuum suction- any salon worth their salt can advise you with a free consultation

7) for the Ladies - some contraceptive pills have been proven to improve Acne Conditions dramatically so this may be a route that you could investigate in consultation with your Doctor

8) I once had a student whose friend had become ill wih a strain of Meningitis through squeezing a Pustule on her forehead - so I could never recommend that you squeeze!

Acne...
no joke i still suffer from it, i try not to squeeze and my face is beginning to clear up, it started at the age of 13 stopped when i was 17 and came back and decided to stay ever since i was pregnant,
now i have started using a clearasil daily scrub, and then, avon cucumber and aloe vera cleansing lotion which calms the skin down, hope this helps others as i have only been using it for 3 days and my skin is clearing up!!! YAY!!!
if my skin does start getting immune to this, i will definately go for HOTMAMA's advice and spend the money on pro-active,
great advice, bit yucky but great!
xx channy

yuck!
Such a bad topic, but one that more people deal with than most realize.  I have acne, it comes and goes, not severe.  My sister and cousin had it BAD!! They got medical treatment.  I only had it half as bad as a teen so my mom did nothing, it was embarasing, the more I would try to hide it the more agrivated my skin would become and the worse it would get.  Now here I am 31 years old and I still have it!  Well untill about 3 weeks ago.  Every month I would break out on my cheek hollows, my chin,  around my bottom lip.  Then I thought I am an adult I dont have to take this! I ordered that Proactive off the tv because they had a shipping special. Seriously!  I was skeptical, but thought what the heck, so I tried it and within 3 days my skin was clearer.  Now I have ran out of the toner, but still use the wash and lotion, I ordered the full size bottles of all three products because I cant beleive the difference.  My chidren will NOT go to school with acne, because I have tried this and I know it works.  No more embarasing acne!  BUT it IS STILL a yucky subject!!! Whether you have it or not!  lollllololo

yuck!

It really does. My best friend has shocking acne. (Or did) I mean REAL BAD. He got some proactive and no joke his skin is beautiful. It really does work!

He keeps telling me to get some but I cant justify spending that much on skincare lol even if it does work
