Impetigo...Commonly known as school sores...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 11th)
Impetigo

Impetigo is usually called 'school sores' and is  a sore that crusts up...It is pretty common and not usually dangerous and is definately a treatable condition... It can be caused either by the staph virus (there is that word again) or group A streptoccocci (strep) bacteria...School sores are
really contagious...no extremely contagious and can spread either through direct contact with one on  someone who is infected with this  or something used by them Like a towel or even a jumper... School sores travel quickly with kids and is helped along the way by the fact they are in such close contact...Heat doesn't seem to help either...Staph and Strep can get into broken skin like a cut or chicken pox sore and off it goes...A school sore appears....

To start with school sores will show up as tiny blisters that will burst and let out a yellow liquid that will form the school sore crust on the top...These blisters can be itchy...Because it is itchy this spreads quickly... Scratch it under the nails of the perosn adn then touch another area and we have spreading happening In most cases the lymph nodes can swell and this is quite common...

If you find school sores in your home or you think you have school sores on one of your family obviously the first port of call is your doctor...They will either prescribe a anti biotic cream or even oral antibiotics... The biggest thing with these is they are really easily passed on from child to child and even to adults...The way you are with hygeine in this time is soooo important...Clean the sores with an antibacterial soap and water and try to discourage scratching and picking of the sores...Keep a towel and face washer for the infected person only and after each use wash it... letting no one else in the house near it...If the person with the infection shaves make sure they shave around this to stop spreading of this along the skin...

You can never be sure not to get these but there are ways you can try to avoid it...Keep all cuts on kids and yourself clean as you can...Lets face it kids and clean can sometimes be hard...teach them to wash their hands regularly...If you do have the infection in your home keep everything related to the infected person seperate and wash your hands after applying the treatment as well...Sometimes the spread of these in your home is unavoidable...But take all the precautions you can...

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Re: Impetigo...Commonly known as school sores...
How timely for me to be stumbling across this - I saw a note as I was leaving Jaydee's 'skool' last week to say that there was a couple of kids that had reported it.  He was a little off colour this week, so I kept him at home - this reminded me of another good reason that I had in the back of my mind.

Well written, good clear down to earth advice Angie - cheers, Lui.

It's common in SA too

Cold sores are common here too, but i've never seen any on any children as of yet, as my daughter's in kindy, but i'm sure i'll see it around.

Thanks for clearing it up

My sister came to visit from interstate and told me her son had "school sores" so when my daughter got one on her face I wasn't really concerned as I knew thety were contagious.

But when my sister told me how her son's "school sores" kept coming back I freaked out and realised quickly that he actually had a cold sore. I think alot of people get confused between the two but they are not at all the same.

I never knew

I'm glad I came across this article...to be honest I have never heard of them before or have known anyone who's kids have had them.

Forgive my ignorance but I know nothing about this topic..so wanna ask

Are they more common in certain places of Australia than others?

For example I'm in S.A. is it as common in S.A. as in Qld or W.A etc?

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. Great article.

I never knew
They are all over matey....I dont think they are more in one state or another....We all carry the staph germ on our skin jsut some of us are more vigilant with washing it off.....This is how they happened in our house once...Someone had a bite on their skin but it got alittle infected from scratching...The staph germ got in and it turned into a school sore....
thanks for your comment

I never knew

Working in a Darwin Pharmacy, it was quite common for parents to bring their kids in with school sores / impetago. So, I gather it's just about everywhere in Australia.

We now live in WA and I've seen a few cases in the last 4 years but not as many as NT.

Not sure about SA but I guess it would be the same.

Re: I never knew
Could it have something to do with the humidity, i think the Staph germ likes that sort of environment to live in....my son got them after bathing in 'hot springs' in NZ.

not nice to go through at all for all
my kids are always clean and because of this they caught it very bad off a child at school . we had to wash everything in hot water and detol, and also keep them away from school , keep the infected areas also wrapped up if you can , my son had one the size of a golf ball ( the blister ) before it  burst , i had no idea about this intill he was infected , the other kids at school that had them where still at school when i took mine out to be treated , i went back to the school and told them they have to send a note home to all parents and the children that has them should be kept at home and treated by their doctor untill its safe to come back to school as it just keeps reinfecting people , the whole class room tables where washed and cleaned also , my other son had it on his face also , it can spread so fast to any area of the body , my boys got it bad poor things . there is such a thing as a child been over clean Impetigo dosent discriminate ,

school sores
thank you angie, and yes its not a nice thing to have in your household.... we had a little boy in care once and he came with school sores, and his mother tried to say he caught it from our place, but it was funny as my kids didnt catch it, or any one in the community or schools have it.....so it makes you wonder if you can be a carrier and not come out with it, and still pass it on... more questions for u to answer for me

Hope I dont need to know this....!

Hope I dont need to know this but I bet I do! DD1 starts "big" school in September. So far we've not got anything worse than coughs & colds off Preschol, but its only a matter of time, & sounds esp awful to me with a child with eczema and having had a bad time with Staph before! Thanks for writing this - I'll know where to come.

BTW are those 2 pics of the infection? Aparently I do not have permission to view them (is this a bug?) - shame as I like pics.

Re: Yuk!!!!
it is yuk. My son has it and it started from a bite I had no idea how contagious it was and kept him at school. i feel like a horrible parent as hubby said take him to doc and I said they'll only give him antibiotics it will heal by itself now it's spread and if i'd taken him he wouldn't have to miss the end of year picnic at school and christmas party at church now he will have to I feel awful. It came up monday and it's now saturday and A friend said go to the chemist as I was starting to worry. I guess I didn't know but feel I should of acted quicker. Now I will have to tell school and a note will have to be sent home to parents anyway I now know but feel awful. one guilty mum.
