Roseola Virus

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 9th)

This is our experience with this virus.

About two weeks ago Zack had an earache which because of all of his ear infections I thought he had another one and started him on antibiotics that we had on standby in the fridge because his earinfections have gotten very bad

very quick. The antibiotics however were not helping and he got a temperature that lasted for 3 days straight. I gave him Nurofen for children which did help his temperature but as soon as the nurofen wore off his temperature was back I spent the first night of his temperature trying to keep him cool with face cloth.

I was very worried and took him to the hospital in the early hours of the morning to have them check him out. I was told there that it was a viral infection and he would be fine. At this stage the only symptoms zack had was the temperature and the earache. He was eating, drinking, having wet and dirty nappies and he was up playing too.

after the third day his temperature went away and I thought great he is better and I thought it was all over until that is I chnged his nappy and noticed he had a bit of a rash. The rash spread very quickly, It was very red and it had bumpy areas that looked like he had been bitten in a thousand places by an insect. He was also very puffy around the eyes.  Another trip to the hospital and another send home saying he was fine it would go away. Well that night my little man was so itchy and he began to puff up even worse to the point where one of his eyes was almost closed I could do nothing more for him the doctor said he would be fine. It was a long hard night and thanks to some great minti friends we got through it and the next morning I took Zack to the chemist to get him something for the itch. The pharmisist gave us some Phernergan to give to him and it worked wonders he was able to sleep and he seemed alot more comfortable.

He still has a bit of the rash today but it is almost gone and he is sleeping better and is happier. This is  a common child hood virus apparently but almost none I have spoken to has heard of it. I wrote this in the hopes that some parents will be able to know how it went for us and maybe notice the signs so they don't panic to much.

All unknown rashes should be checked by  a doctor. It is always better to be safe than sorry

Re: Roseola Virus

I actually suffered from this virus a couple of times during a one year period as an adult. I was very run down, and had just been through a huge trauma (death of a very very close family member, and I was "kidnapped").

My doctor thought I was very strange, but explained to me that I must've still had the virus lingering in my system from when I was a child, and the fact that I was not eating or sleeping, and was constantly sick gave it the perfect opportunity to break out again!

No one else I had ever spoken to had heard of it, not even other nurses while I was doing my training!

Thanks for spreading the word!

Re: Roseola Virus
You know the same exact thing is happening to my daughter right now! We were out of town so I couldnt take her to see her regular doctor. The pedia i took her to just misdiagnosed it and said it was probably an allergic reaction to something. He prescribed her antibiotics for a cough she already had and all sorts of other medicines. She got extremely groggy and just wanted to sleep (which is usually never!). Then when I finally got to call her regular doctor, he told me that it must've been roseola and to look it up. My question though is, when i looked it up on different sites in the internet, they all say that the rashes are not itchy... but she is scratching herself to sleep! I don't quite know how to relieve the itchiness... she's on medicine for the itch... an anti-histamine prescribed by her doctor. Can I apply hydrocortisone cream to relieve it? and why do all these medical sites say they aren't itchy when they are?? thanks for your post... phew! now I know she's not the only one... :D

Rosiola
Hi
Guess what Lexi
Your little man has just had baby measles which is what rosiola is
A very mild form of measles affecting little ones
Rowan had it when he was little.
We think Jalan had it recently but as the paediatrician said he was not 100% sure.
He said various viruses show up the same way....with the same rash.  There is no actual test to diagnose it fully.
But to me it was the same as rowan had when he was little
Great article....
Vallergan is another thing that can help and Animine and Calamine
Luv Deb
